Party Hearty by the Pool.. have the basement open also .. have a Hawiian theme and keep everything relaxed and food in both places...

Poolside parties are always nice. If your friends are into Baseball or Nascar that could be your theme. You didn't say how many people or how big of a yard you have but Volleyball, crochet, badminton etc. are always nice. Food that is prepared in advance is best so no one has to stand over a hot grill all day. Barbecue in crock pot, Salads - green , potato, macaroni etc. Chicken or fish could be cooked on grill prior to day of party and grill used to add finishing touch only. Music should be appropriate for the theme and the genres that your guests prefer. Will young children be involved? If so, you might want to plan activities for them as well.

Go Reggae!!! out by the pool since the weather is nice...decorate with the Jamica colors yellows, green, red, white linen table cloths, steel band music, Jamacain food, limbo games, make them feel like they're in the islands.
you could even have a hair braider on site to do their hair for the night.

Not just a toga party - host a Bacchanalia - go for pure unadulterated Roman debauchery - a la Caligula or Nero.

I went to a 70s themed party once it was fun. We all had to dress in 70s clothes and they played disco all night. It was great.
