Absolutely!

There is always going to be a chance of him spreading the virus to his wife regardless if he wears a condom or not, or is having an outbreak or not. Condoms are not 100% effective in preventing the spread of herpes and the virus can be spread even if you are not on an outbreak. And, since a couple obviously needs to have unprotected sex in order to have a baby then the chances of him spreading the virus to his wife increases.

There are other ways to have children like artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization, but this can be very expensive and also takes away the thrill and fun of making a baby together.

If he does pass the virus to his wife then there is a chance she can spread it to the baby during birth. It's possible to spread the virus during birth if the mother is currently on an outbreak. As the baby is coming through the birth canal it can rub against the herpes sores causing the baby to contract the virus. If the baby does contract herpes during birth it is about 25% fatal. Being born with herpes is VERY rare though and can be avoided by having a C-section delivery. And, if his wife isn't having an outbreak or never contracted it from him, then it is perfectly fine for her to have a normal vaginal birth.

Also, just because a person has sex with someone who has genital herpes doesn't mean it's a guarantee they will get it. I have personally had genital herpes for 6+ years. I was with one ex for almost 4 years and he never contracted the virus from me. There are many couples out there with one person who has the virus and the other doesn't.

I'm sure there will always be SOME risk, however if it has been inactive for a while the risk is greatly reduced. Herpes isn't as big of a deal as people make it out to be. So many people have oral herpes, and its basically the same thing. Sores. Not the end of the world. If his wife really loves him I bet she would be willing to take the small risk of getting a few sores in order to have the infinite pleasures of a child with her husband.

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

He will have to wait for a time when the herpes is not active and there are no sores present to be able to have unprotected sex without passing it on. There are treatments that you can recieve from your docter that you take everyday to stop sores from reappearing.
