why do people choose to be vegetarians? Man is a omniviorus animal and it seems natural to consume at least some meat.

I wish to remind you that animals are not 'people' and it is my sincere belief that some kinds of animals were born to die and be eaten!

TO DANCES_WITH_UNICORNS:
hi, dances_with_unicorns. nice to meet you! now you know a vegan who does not take any supplements! :o)

however do you deal with yourself? for you are a fool for having no knowledge on animal habits. animals have feelings. yes, go ahead and look it up. they have instincts, and they are also capable of love and companionship. even a chicken who was given duck eggs to incubate hatched them and proceeded to take the baby ducklings to the water... how intelligent! far more intelligent than what little brain you seem to have!

and... what would possess an animal to kick and scream when it's being put in a position where it's not comfortable? true, they may not know that they are about to be slaughtered, but fear is a common feeling that we feel, too, isn't it? of course animals are not like humans in the sense that they don't get up in the morning, make their cup of coffee, go to work, make dinner, and go to sleep. but like a baby cries for his mother when he wants attention or is hungry, a baby calf, who will be made into veal, also cries for its mother when it is separated from her shortly after he is born.

i'll be nice and spare you the thumbs down. have a nice life! :o)

TO QUESTION MARK:
if you're really curious about vegetarianism, then please read "Diet For A New America" by John Robbins. it contains tons of information, and will provide proven research and facts against any anti-vegetarian argument.

excerpt from the book:
"The human intestine is anatomically different from that of the natural carnivores, such as dogs and cats. Because of the design of their intestines, these animals are virtually guaranteed shorter transit times.

"Our bowel walls are deeply puckered; theirs are smooth. Ours are full of pouches; theirs have none. Our colons are long, complex pathways...; theirs are short, straight chutes... The toxins from putrefying flesh are not the problem for them that they are for us because everything passes through them so much more quickly. Dogs, cats, and the other natural carnivores do not get colon cancer from high-fat, low-fiber, flesh-based diets. But we do."

best wishes.

Whether you choose to believe this or not, humans were not made for meat consumption.
We don't have the teeth or the digestive system for it.
Animals that are omnivores have rows of sharp teeth, not flat molars like we have.
Our digestive system cannot even completely digest the meat, and it tends to sit and forment in the intestinal tract.
We also do not have the right stomach acids to not only assist in the digestion process, but to kill off any of the dangerous bacteria. Which is why humans get sick from contaminated meat and animals do not.
Those are all proven facts. What you decide to do with this information is your choice, but one cannot hide from the truth.
And furthermore, eating meat is simply disgusting.

Meat is not the only source of protein! Tofu and beans, for example, are very high in protein. I've been a vegetarian for 17 years and I've never been anemic. I take vitamin supplements not because I'm vegetarian, but because everyone should! It's very hard for one to eat all the foods that contain the nutrients we need (even meat eaters).
Why do the ignorant meat eaters automatically assume they are healthier? Do you blindly believe al the nutrients you need can be found in meat? It's been proven that meat eaters are more prone to many health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, colon cancer, diabetes, etc.
And vitamins are natural, not synthetic and have nothing to do with medication! There is no comparison between vitamins and medicine! Well renowned companies that make vitamins do not use animal testing, whereas pharmaceutical companies making medicine do.

I personally don't believe that we are meant to eat meat. We began as scavengers, and with the invention of tools went on to hunt.

Here is a fun little movie to watch if you feel so inclined to take the time : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05zhL1YUd8Q

Now that I have that out of the way, since I know many people will never agree on that subject no matter how much facts and information I could come back with on the matter..lets take a look at it another way...

I know, I know, people think its an awful thing for others to think "but the poor animals!!"..well guess what, thats how I think. There is nothing natural in which the majority of society obtains their meat and dairy products. In most cases they all come from factory meat and dairy farms. Erase any idea you may have of a happy little Farmer Macdonald place, with cows mooing and everywhere there is oink oinks and get realistic! We can in no way be compared to predators anywhere on this planet belonging to the animal kingdom, even the good ol' boy hunter and his trusty rifle does not suffice !! I am sure you are following here. I dont rightly feel the need to post numerous links of how the industries works, what happens to cows in order to continuously supply people with their milk, how animals living conditions are up to their own slaughter. You must know none of this is a good thing!

As for nutrition and health, I choose to go directly to the main source, and avoid the middle man (animal.)..if you catch my drift.

Actually, the teeth and digestive system of humans are more comparable to a herbaviour. What we consider canine teeth are not true canines but rather more rounded and cone shapes. The digestive system has trouble digesting flesh and often confuses meat with the stomach and intestinal linning itself. Many researchers believe the consumption of meat is the leading cause of colon cancer. I chose to be a vegetarian due to my moral beliefs. I didn't agree with the slaughter of animals or the way they are treated. I later discovered that a vegetarian lifestyle is much healthier and I had more energy and lost 15 lbs. Some people say the animals are killed quick and painless but that has been proven to be false. There are so many videos on the internet about people breaking animals legs and watching them try to walk or they break bones while confined in too small of spaces and suffer. Anyone who believes these animals do no feel pain is ignorant and yes they do know what is coming otherwise they would not try to get away or put up a fight. It's simply cruel and inhumane to contribute to unnecesary slaughter. As for things you need from meat there aren't any. You can get protien from nuts, beans, and legumes and vitamin B12 from vegtables. People who say you need meat to be healthy are uneducated about what they do need and no people do not need mercury. In fact it's very toxic and can easily kill someone.

Don't worry, it may at first sound like I'm preaching, but really I'm just trying to thouroughly and informatively answer your question.

It's a common misconception that man is meant to eat meat.

Our teeth and digesive tracts are alot more similar to a horse's (herbivore) than a carnivore (ex.. cat).

All the nutrients we need can be found in plant sources in much better quality, more easily absorbable, than in meat products.

People go vegetarian for a variety of reasons. IT may be just one of the following, or a combindation.

1. They realize that with all the hormones, diseases, etc.. in meat animals today, it is practically unsafe to eat meat, simply because of how these animals are raised/produced today. For example, cows are meant to eat grass, not ground up sheep and other cows. But they are fed these things to make them fatter faster. But this causes all kinds of disease in the cows, making their meat unhealthy. A group tried to find cancer-free chickens to start an egg production facility, and couldn't find any disease-free chickens.

2. They do not wish to support the INCREDIBLY inhumane ways that meat-producing animals are raised/treated/killed

3. They are up-to date on the latest scientific evidence which is now showing that vegetarianism is healthieir for our bodies, and vegetarians live longer, etc.. Only very old fashioned, ill informed, stubborn dietitians are still claiming that we HAVE to have some meat in the diet. Any reasonable one will tell you that you have to have PROTIEN, and that protien can come from meat, BEANS, or NUTS. Look at the food pyramid!!

4. They simply have an aversion to any animal being killed for their consumption. Animals, unlike plants, have a brain and centeral nervous system. Therefore they can feel pain, fear, emotions. (I can prove all this, but now's not the time)

5. It is becoming considered rather "fashionable" to be a vegetarian. Just look at how many celebs are. It's the latest vogue! Of course this is a very bad reason to go veggie, but I'm listing it because I'm sure it's some people's only reason. http://www.famousveggie.com/peoplenew.cfm

6. Some people just develop a dislike for meat, same as someone who just can't stand broccoli, etc..

Hope this answers your question!

Can't speak for everyone, but the vegetarians I know don't want to eat farmed meat after finding out how the animals are treated and what they're fed etc. If it was a case of hunting wild and free animals they wouldn't have a problem with eating it. I know some people who won't eat anything that they wouldn't mind killing themselves. I personally can't kill anything, I don't feel I have the right to take a life. I don't think I'm going to change the world or anything but I believe that one should live according to what one believes is right and I believe mass farming of animals for food and dairy is wrong.

My reasons are I honestly dont think its fair to kill innocent animals, not only animals death but the conditions meat/poultry animals are kept. For instance thousands of chickens are kept in cages.
Another reason. I personally think vegetarian food is tastier.
Meat produce is an extreamly expensive industry. It cost a huge amount of cash, water and land to produce healthy eating meat, if more people stopped eatting meat and the demand lowers more land can be used for growing plants and is a step closer to stop hunger in third world countries.

Check out this video by Dan Piraro, writer of Bizarro about humans being meat eaters:

It's fun and has some interesting insight. :-)

And by the way, about the vitamins comment... there is an entire website dedicated to only vegetarian vitamins. All come from plant and mineral sources, not meat. There are also labels that say suitable for vegans or vegetarians on regular drugstore vitamins. All of the vitamins I take are vegan friendly.

Yes, it does seem natural to consume meat. But are slaughterhouses and the way the animals are treated natural? I became a vegetarian because it sickens me that people can treat animals the way they do.

I'll save you the whole I don't wanna kill innocent animals spiel I just don't like the taste or texture of meat. I bothers me that I am eating some thing's flesh and I have no idea what that thing actually is unless I killed it, which I will never do. Yeah we were meant to be omnivores but different strokes for different folks. I'll leave my extra meat for you ;) lol
