My girlfriend had what looked like the start of a cold sore, that was 8 days ago and nothing has come up. So we called it a false alarm and kissed anyway. I'm willing to accept that i might have them.

My question it, If you kiss someone who has one, are you always gonna get it that very second, or is it possible that you can get lucky and not contract it?

If there is an active lesion, you will likely get it, and it can be transmitted to your genitalia if you participate in oral sex too, the virus is active for up to three weeks after the lesion has healed and disappeared. If you had chicken pox as a child you already have the virus dormant in your nervous system and her active lesion could activate the one you may already have. Good luck to you.

i have gotten cold sores since i was a kid. Its genetic sometimes. My bf never gets them from me even if we kiss. It is possible but some people just have better immune systems and don't contract them from others i guess. Now genital herpes is way different and can easily be contracted, but fortunatly i believe you mean only the mouth and lip kind.

It's a virus, depends on if your body has encountered that strain before.
