I need a simple NON LUMPY sweet and sour sauce if anyone can help. I have a husband and daughter who don't like lumps in their food, so it needs to be nice and smooth. I currently use a Homepride cook in sauce which we really really like, but I hate things out of tins so would love to do it myself. Thanks in advance.

May have to put this to the vote, because I've had loads of really good answers, but no idea which is best because I haven't had chance to try any yet!! Thanks everyone

Sure. Refer to the following ingredients:
* 1/3 cup white or rice vinegar
* 4 TB brown sugar
* 1 TB ketchup
* 1 tsp soy sauce
* 2 teaspoons cornstarch mixed with 4 teaspoons water
Mix the vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, and soy sauce together and bring to a boil in a small pot. Mix together the cornstarch and water, add to the other ingredients and stir to thicken.
I've also finished this with orange zest and pinapples in the past, but I'll skip that since you're after the non-chunky version. :P

Sweet and Sour Sauce
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup water
3 teaspoons cornstarch
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons vinegar or rice vinegar
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 green bell pepper, or 1/2 red and 1/2 green bell pepper, cut into chunks
PREPARATION:
In a small bowl, mix 4 teaspoons of the water with the cornstarch. Set aside.
Bring the remainder of the water, the sugar, vinegar, ketchup and soy sauce to a boil, stirring a few times.
Give the cornstarch and water mixture a quick re-stir and add to the sauce, stirring constantly.
Add the bell pepper chunks. Heat through

1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar (you can use less, as long as the amount of sugar is the same as the amount of vinegar)
4 tablespoons catsup (sometimes I do this and sometimes I don't - depends on my mood)
drain the juice from a can of pineapple into a cup, then add water to make 2 cups of liquid. Add all but 1/2 cup of this to the sugar/vinegar mixture. Bring this all to a boil.
Add 3-4 tablespoons of cornstarch to the 1/2 cup liquid you saved. Make sure the liquid is cold and not warm - that's the trick to getting cornstarch dissolved. Once it is mixed in and completely smooth, THEN add this to the heated mixture above. Add soy sauce/sea salt/whatever you like that's a bit salty to taste. Once you like the way it's tasting, then bring it back to a boil to thicken it. You can then either add the pineapple (which my husband likes) or not (which my children prefer) to the sauce.
Feel free to add or subtract from the amounts above - it's more about personal preference and taste and texture anyway. You can also use orange juice instead of the pineapple for a different taste.

I have never seen the McDonald's brand sweet and sour sauce at the supermarket. They do sell the ketchup! Try going to the International section of the store and look for Suzi Wan brand sweet and sour sauce. It is not exactly the same... but you may find it is better! Enjoy :o)
