I receive a lot of computer and electronic equipment packed in Styrofoam peanuts and I hate to just throw it away if I do not reuse it in shipping. Is it recyclable? Is there someplace to take it? Is it worth selling? Is Styrofoam in general recyclable, or does it break down in 300 years or so? I am not a complete tree hugger by any means but I hate to throw stuff out that can be legitimately reused. Thanks for any help.

Drop them off at a UPS or other Shipping and Mailing store. They will gladly take them.

The styrofoam 'peanuts' are definitely recyclable, and they don't break down easily. I suggest that you can try the following sources to get rid of them:

>sell / give them to hobby shops or furniture stores. Some of them make 'bean-bag' type of furnitures or toys out of them.
>sell / give to them to shipping / courier companies
>if you're a handyman, you may consider using them for insulation (for heat / sound / chilling) around the house

Save them and offer them on Freecycle. There are many people who sell items on e-bay who would be more than happy to use these! You can go to www.freecycle.com to check about posting the peanuts for pick-up in your area. If it's NOT in your area, you personally can start the program up. Freecycle is one of the greatest programs around! If you live in Ohio, I'll come and pick the things up myself! LOL (Same goes for material like bubble wrap!)

Go to: http://freecycle.org/

You can join the group in your area. Check it out, what else do you have that you want to get rid of?

I've gotten two rose bushes, five dwarf crepe myrtles, fishing gear, bicycle, helmet, can opener, clip art and probably more that I don't remember.

I've offered a tripod, children's clothes, stuffed animals and more that I can't remember.

The only catch is everything must be FREE. OK, so that's not a real catch. :)

Also ask your local recycling centers or even your local enviromental groups. They usually will tell you who or where you can take them or who will even buy them. Ask also pc repair shops, glasswares, and gift shops. Go online to see how much it costs to order styrofoam for shipping and base your price on used to purchase. Thanks for being pro green!

Give them to lacal artists so when they sell their wares, they dont have to buy thir own. I have alot of friends that are artists and I give them my newegg, amazon boxes and peanuts. Good thinking, even small impacts are positive ones.

Alot of those peanuts are now biodegradeable made out of corn starch.

It isn't worth selling but you can take it to a mail store like FedEx and they sometimes take it and reuse it.

Another slant on this subject...
You could contact your local schools to see if the teachers can use them.
We used to save everything for the kindergarten. It's truly amazing to see the arts & crafts projects the kids make.

Donate them to a shipping store in town. I'm sure they would appreciate them!

Yes they are recyclable. Just put them in your garbage recycling bin, if they have those where you live.
