I am not all that familiar with Chicago recycling, but I am from Milwaukee, and I think that the general rule of thumb is that you don't have to take the labels off. It might be true that you have to take the caps off. In Milwaukee, through regular pick-up recycling, we could leave the caps and labels on. The can crushing bit, I don't think is necessary. Most people including my dad use it as a way to save space, so that he can collect more cans before actually going to the recycling center himself. It means more cash back that way. I'm sure if you plan on going often, it returns the same amount of money, but in the long run, you use less gas making one trip. :)
