Chances are that is a benign condition but as a starting point an EKG, especially while the condition is occuring will help to determine what if anything this may be. If that is not possible a Holter monitor or an event monitor can be used to capture fast rates over a longer period of time.

There is a condition called supraventricular contractions that can happen at a young age with no particular prompting - and can really cause the heart to race and it can be treated. It usually is not dangerous in young people but can cause problems as you age. Some work-up is warranted to get this fully evaluated to be certain.

If the work-up is negative, believe the results and rest assured that you have nothing serious. At that point it may be reasonable to consider palpitations and/or anxiety as the source.

Start with your primary doctor. In the meantime, stay away from stimulants - caffiene, energy drinks, decongestants, etc. Get plenty of sleep.

Good luck.

This is called an arrhythmia, and it can be caused by factors external to the heart or by the heart itself. Some common external factors are caffeine, anxiety, nicotine, and thyroid problems. Problems with the heat itself are usually due to improper propagation of nerve impulses across the heart or leaky or partly clogged valves.

Its a good idea to visit the doctor, although sometimes, arrhythmias can't be diagnosed when they aren't actually occurring. Sometimes the doctors hook a person up to a small personal heart monitor for a week so they can record events where the heart is racing.

Lots of medications can cause it. I trust you haven't been drinking a case of Red Bull a day or downing pots of coffee. Diet pills?? Antihistamines?

I doubt if BP will tell you much but you can go to a drug store to check it for free. 120/80 is the boarder line. I suggest that if you are concerned that you go to a Dr. and express your concerns. They will want to know about medications etc. Caffeine ... and if they suspect you may have a problem they will do an EKG.

These may be heart palpitations and it is possible that you have a heart murmur (when blood passes through deformed valves). Heart murmurs are very common (my cat has one too!) and they are usually not anything serious. Go to the doc and get a physical. If you do not have a heart murmur and you have been experiencing lots of stress, it may be the start of anxiety attacks. I have had them and my heart will start to beat fast and it is very uncomfortable. Good luck and I hope you get better soon! :)

Your autonomic nervous system is responsible for this. The autonomic nervous system encompasses all the things you don't tell your body to do, which is breathing, digestion, heart beat etc.

Another mechanism are hormones. You have 87 hormones in your body and only 6% are responsible for sexual reproduction. Your pituitary gland is sending a signal to your hypothalamus to send a signal to your heart and is supposed to give it a hormonal signal for the heart to beat.

Now, since your pituitary is connected to the thalamus and hypothalamus, liver, kidneys, adrenal glands, ovaries etc.. which is your endocrine system... It is a system.

Your endocrine system is a part of the autonomic nervous system run by all 87 hormones and you have 7 unique surges of hormones a day.

Your heart may be beating fast because you don't have enough support for your adrenal glands. What causes lack of hormones to support your adrenals which then cause a chain reaction for your heart to beat fast?

It is STRESS! Stress can be medication. Stress can be lack of sleep. Stress can be lack of a good balanced diet. Stress can be too much caffeine and lack of appetite. Any one of these things can cause not enough nutritional food molecules to support your adrenal glands and your endocrine system.

a fast heart beat could just be tachycardia. if theres no known cause for it after tests are taken, it could be anxiety.
