Having been on Xanax, I think you would be better to try to learn to manage your anxiety attacks. I suffered from the occasional attack and went on to preventative medication ( 1 or 2 Xanax a day) to make sure I did not have an attack. Usually these were taken at bed time, and some nights it would be so late that I would think that if I was to take them late, I would find it difficult to wake up in the morning. Several times I missed them for over 48 hours. I then thought I was having a panic attack, after discussion with my specialist, we worked out that what I was experiencing was withdrawal from the medication, not a panic attack. I reduced my dose gradually, and after two weeks was able to kick them. Xanax is physically addictive, I now take a Valium if I need it, they are only Psychologically addictive, so I know my body is not screaming out for the drug, and I can get by without it better. The best idea is to not have to depend on drugs to cure the attack, but to learn what the trigger is and to manage the situation when it arises, take charge of the situation and do not let it take charge of you. From someone who has been bi-polar for 43 years, I promise you, I know what I am talking about. My bi-polar is now nicely under control. If you actually enjoy the warm fuzzy feeling Xanax can give you, you will have trouble kicking them. They also steal your memory, and you will be amazed at some of the dumb things you are capable of while under the influence of Xanax, and totally not believe you have done this, then a small memory sparks and you realise what a fool you were and so the circle is reborn. Try to kick them, there are other alternatives. Good luck with it. JJ (P.S. this is from someone who took at least one a day for six years.) *** Remember: The withdrawal has the exact same pattern as the actual attack, you can kick this if you want to.*** Reduce your dose gradually, if you are on two tablets a day, reduce it by a half a tablet for 4 days, then by another half for four days, then take only half for another four days, then down to one quarter for four days, then take one quarter every other day, then one quarter and skip two days, do this four times, then your body should all but be rid of the drug. If you stop at the end of this, your body should not notice any withdrawal. JJ

You know the problem with Xanax is that it doesn't do anything to correct the underlying problem. It covers up the symptoms and temporarily makes a person feel better. Unfortunately over time, a patient needs more to get the same effect and there's even some evidence that the anxiety and panic intensifies with withdrawl from the medication -making your condition worse.
Given all of that - it seems to me dealing with the anxiety in some other manner is in your best interest over the long haul.
Xanax is fine if used on a very occassional basis or for situational anxiety, like plane flights...but using it more that a few times a month is a bad idea and will lead to dependence.

The drugs known as SSRIs can be used for anxiety and are not addictive like Xanax. The include Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc. Go see a doctor. You may need treatment for withdrawal symptoms.

You should see aDr. first to determine if you are really a candidate for this medication. This drug is abused frequently. Many people Dr. shop just to get this medication. It is highly addictive. I fear you are seeking the drug rather help for anxiety. If you are prescribed this medication for true anxiety you need to be closely monitored by health care professional.
