I know the local craft stores here (in NY) have car shaped cake pans. If he's turning 1, I would have a small cake for him to "dig into", as that's what most small children do, and then have the bigger cake that's for everyone the nicer or fancier cake. You could make the smaller cake, a normal small round cake, and on the top with frosting draw a steering wheel, or a tire.

For the larger cake, if you decide to do a car from a 3-D cake pan or rather that it's more like a 2-D cake pan.... You could use granola as the "ground" or graham cracker pie crust. As for decorating the actual cake, I believe it will leave impressions for the windows, door, things like that, so you will be able to just ice it with the appropriate colors. I would recommend not using the gel icing as it melts and runs easily. If you have the decorating tips that would make it more interesting looking as well. It gives the cake "texture", that you could use for the tires and such. If he has a favorite color, or a color theme like in his bedroom or something, you could go with that as the color of the car. White for the windows with maybe light blue streaks to similate the "glass" reflection.

Goodie bags you could put in those little named license plates for all the little ones invited, amongst whatever else you put in there. That could be "the big gift" in the goodie bag. And when they're old enough (depending on ages of course) they could put them on their bikes or powerwheels or whtaever they call them now, lol. Streamers of course, birthday signs. For an event you could replace "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" with "Pin the Wheels on the Car". Using tape of course! There's plenty of fun things you can do! :) I could go on, send me an email if you want lol. Have fun and enjoy while he's little!!!

You could do a 'first wheels' birthday party or a 'first birthday train' theme - one that involves animals or cartoon characters would proably be best for a one-year old.

When he turns 2, he'll probably ask for a car theme anyway! Try this site:

It has great idea for theme and first birthday cakes that can be made at home.

Good luck!

There's a cute car cake on this site: http://www.passion-for-parties.com/birthday-cake-design.html .

Some other fun theme ideas for a first birthday are farm animals, teddy bears, or a puppy party.

Get some cheap hotwheels and make a "Dirt" road on the cake. Go to the craft store and get some little plastic trees to use for the side of the road. They might even have little tiny road signs. If you don't want to make your own go to Safeway. They have a cake from the movie "Cars" right now.

Car themes are cool. So are: jungle themes, sponge bob (for all ages), and photo cakes are HOT right now.. Put a pic of him when he was real tiny and then on the other side, one of him from this year

I would do an animal or cartoon character at his age. Save the car theme for a couple years from now, when he'll still like them and animals will have been SO over. That way you don't have to repeat a theme.

One year old. Does he know what a car is. What happened to Elmo or a Teddy bear. Why not make a sheet cake and put some long division on it for him to solve.
