I'm 56. Figure it will make me look very cool. I can afford it, where I couldn't when I was younger. Plus, it can't really shorten my life much at this point. Is there a downside? Will it interfere with my exercise regimen?

My GOD!! Does NO ONE recognize sarcasm when she or he sees it??? No, I don't smoke and have no plans to. But I have NEVER asked a question that generated this many answers. Actually, I congratulate all of you who rightly point out that it isn't in fact cool.

why the hell not? You only live once (as far as I know). I mean, look, it's not gonna make you live LONGER. It is not good for you, but man, a lot of things aren't good for you. meat, microwaves, cellphones, television, as of recently, spinach, not enough exercise, too much exercise, women, fast cars, drugs, loud music, Neo-cons, terrorism, heatstroke, frostbite, dog bites, bug bites, megabytes, etcetera, etcetera....so at 56, you're already ahead of the game as far as I'm concerned. So light up Smokey! cuz if you don't, and let's say, you die in a car crash tomorrow, you might regret not ever trying it, and who knows, you might like it.

NO!!!
It doesn't make you cool, at all. It will make you actually UNCOOL. I mean, it doesn't make a person happy to see a 56 year old man smoking because he thinks it's "cool". That will make a person think that you're actually very stupid. You haven't heard of what smoking can do to you? Plus, It will make you smell, look bad, feel bad, and so on. If you have children or grandchildren, you especially don't want to start smoking. Even though 56 is a long time you've been living, if you don't smoke and do drugs and eat healthy, then you'll live the happiest life you'll possibly live, and for a long time that is. Don't you want to live the rest of your life well? Start a hobby or sport instead. It also interferes with your breathing, your relationships with your family and friends, but I don't know what exercise regimen is, but I'm sure it will interfere with that too, since it ruins everything. It doesn't matter when you start smoking, it's just common sense that you shouldn't smoke at all. Why would you ask this question in the first place?? I'm 12 and I know that it's not good for you, and you should definitely know too.
There's also this deputy man, he's probably around the same age as you are... and he's the coolest because he has lived through everything, and he says he wants to live through more. And I know he will live through everything he wants to, because he doesn't smoke, drink, or do any of that nonsense, and I know that he has the will to do that. He has lived through being a football player (not professional, but in high school), soldier in the Vietnam war (where he almost got shot lots of times), and he is now a deputy person where he is faced with lots of crazy men that do really really bad things. Please do me a favor, and be like him and inspire lots and lots of kids like me. Make me want to not smoke or do drugs.

Honestly, when I read this, I thought you must be joking....but I'll answer anyway. First of all, it can shorten your life!! With modern medicine, people are living longer all the time...and smoking greatly reduces your life expectancy..As for your exercise regimen, yes it will definitely affect that. Smoking decreases your lung capacity, constricts the blood vessels, and increases the production of platelets in the bloodstream. What this means is you won't be able to breathe as well, you may get dizzy, and a blood clot could cause a heart attack. If you've made it this long without smoking, then don't start. The money that you don't spend on cigarettes, try donating to your favorite charity.

It will definetly effect your excersire regimen. You will become short of breath very fast, you will cough a lot not to mention your breath will smell bad as well as your hands from holding the cigarette, your teeth will stain yellow and from a medical perspective you will increase your chances of heart disease, stroke, tongue, throat and lung cancer.......its a pretty high price to pay just to look cool dont you think ? If you've been a non-smoker this long dont ruin your health now by smoking, treat yourself better than that, and to top it off do you really want to be a slave to a pack of cigarettes ? Because thats what you'll become, it will control you !
The choice is yours but I dont think you can find 1 REALLY good reason to start smoking...and being cool isnt a good enough reason !
Think about it !

Is this a joke?
I am 65 and believe me, nothing looks more ridiculous than an older person smoking. I gave it up 6 years ago. I also have heart disease.
No, it wont shorten your life, that is, if you only want to live another year.
As for exercise, you won't be able to breathe very well.
And it could be the last breath you ever take if you smoke and exercise at the same time.

Are you seriously asking this question? If so, let me help. YES it will affect your work out. Yes it can and in all likelyhood will shorten your lifespan. Lung cancer is nasty. you don't even want to go there. Also, ther are many other poisons in the smoke from cigerettes including nicotene (which will kill in small doses) and cyanide. It will reduce your lung capacity and the ability to gety o2 into your system. At 56, why would you need to worry about looking cool. Just be yourself and leave the darn things alone.

that's a good one :) BUT there is a real question within the sarcasm. Why shouldn't a person take up smoking? WELL because there are low-risk things to do..and there are HIGH_RISK things to do. Smoking, is of course a high-risk activity. Most have received the info that smoking kills , but noone knows for sure what effect smoking will have on you. We all react differently, some live long lives, others die from any number of complications. Is it important enough to pick-up smoking, and risk your life for it? course not.

Is this a serious question, or one of those questions to try and rile people up? No, it's never a good time to start smoking, and Yes it probably will interfere with your excersize. It won't make you look cool, it'll actually more likely drive people away (especially if you have grandchildren...think of them). Spend your money on something more worth while. Something tells me you already knew to do that.

NO! Yeah, there is a downside. You STINK! Your teeth turn a nasty brown color. It doesn't look "cool". What are you, some overaged moron trying to look like a teenager? At 56 you shouldn't care about looking "cool" and obviously if you feel the need to try and look cool you are going through some sort of late-term mid-life crisis.

It yellows your fingernails, toenails, and teeth. Plus, smokers tend to lose track of their habit, to the point where cigarette buds are left all over the place. It tends to reduce hygiene in more ways than one.

I'm 25, and thought about taking up smoking. It seems like a good hobby to kill time, plus it seems cool to blow dark smoke out at random times, but these are very minor gains compared to the cons. As far as making one feel more relaxed, well, I think the effect is moderate at best.

no and why do u think it will make you cool. if you feel that way about life then find a hobby. if you're 56 then (i cant believe i'm saying this) but youre considered middle aged (NOT OLD). dont know where you're from but you need to look up your statistic because men in Canada, U.S., U.K, and other 1st world countries have a higher life expectancy than you think. Also it makes you stink, yellow your teeth, makes holes in your clothes, makes it harder to breathe, and then you have a higher risk of cancer, heart disease and many other diseases that will have your last days in pain on a hospital bed.

Men might be 76?...
