Suppose a 50 year old man was very ill (had congestive heart failure and major heart surgery recently) and could not return to work, was out of sick days and vacation days, and has no money in the bank. Would he qualify for any state assistance. i.e food stamps, medicaid, cash assistance in Florida ? He will most likely qualify for disability, but that could take a year or more !

Getting SSD (social security disability) with heart failure is very easy, should take only 5 months. Either get the application on http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ or contact the toll free number at 1-800-772-1213. Make sure you don't sugar coat anything. If he is not doing well, don't make it sound like he is even a little bit. If he got disability insurance through his job that will help to see him through until he starts collecting SSD. Also go to http://www.state.fl.us/cf_web/ for state assistance. All of the information you need including numbers for medicaid, etc. He won't get medicare until he has been on SSD for 2 years so he will need medicaid, don't hesitate to apply for that. Also let them know you have applied for SSD and have a doctor's note that he can't work when you go for public assistance or they will make him sign up for the work program.

Not necessarily. I had to fight for what I got and I'm still fighting. My husband had quadruple bypass on April 04. He also has diabetes. For the longest time; he was not on medication for either and for the longest time I saw him getting worse. I pushed and pushed and he is finally getting the help he needs but because of all of the time; he is having colon surgery on Monday and his surgeon is still not too pleased that at the age of 58 he has only had one colon exam but those things are expensive.

You have to contact the Office of Public Assistance in the city where you live. Rules vary from state to state.
