There are many causes for air hunger some of which are:
asthma
anxiety attacks
hyperventilation syndrome
pulmonary edema
diabetic ketoacidosis
uremia
peritonitis
severe hemorrhage
pneumonia
The best way to treat it is to treat the underlying cause and a visit to the doctor is needed to determine that cause. Please see a doctor asap.

Treatment of air hunger depends on the cause (excellent list above). Bottom line is that many items on that list constitute medical emergencies, so get to an A&E if they look sick (pale, blue/dusky lips, blue/dusky tongue, sweating, cold to the touch, and especially if they can't speak full sentences or if they get exhausted), and get your doctor on the case if they don't .
