The number of those currently infected with HSV 2 is over 50million. Remember that this does not take into account those infected with type 1 genital herpes. Currently 70% of all new genital herpes infections in those in the college age range are type 1. Yet there are no studies or statistics being done to determine how many in the general population currently have it.

So how many people in the US actually have genital herpes? No one knows for sure. But there is no question that the total number is much higher than the 1/4 that has type 2 genitally.

According to a study in the journal Sexually Transmitted Diseases, "infection with HSV-2 has occurred in an estimated 45 million Americans, even though less than one quarter perceive themselves to have genital herpes." http://www.stdjournal.com/pt/re/std/fulltext.00007435-199904001-00002.htm;jsessionid=GpmbT3fBTLL1nXYggV0BC5t9S0hvbYDy1psCVpJhwzDyn4qTbS7M!-1804036389!-949856145!8091!-1

HSV is not a reportable disease, so the stats are estimated. But various studies peg the proportion of the infected population to be 20-30% of all adults.
