With fairly heavy smoking (10 -20 a day) How long would it take on average to develop this? I've always assumed it to be a later life thing, would hate it to develop at an early stage though.

I am not a physician, but I think that would depend upon several different factors. Is there a history of lung problems (asthma, lung cancer, severe allergies) in the person's family? Why type of cigarettes do they smoke (reds, lights, menthol's)? Emphysema does not just instantly happen to all smokers after the two year mark. Smoking affects different people in different ways because our bodies are all different. I know that this was probably not the answer you were looking for. Sorry.

Hi, I doubt you have got emphysema but the chances of u getting it increase 500% by continuing to smoke. Btw it doesn't really matter if u only smoke 10 a day your cilia are still paralysed meaning u can't fight infections etc as well as non smokers. Try and quit then u won't have all the worries u have now and u will be happy, healthy and have more cash. Good luck

There is no way to know, as everyone is different. Some smoke 50 years and don't get emphysema and others have it who never smoked.

It usually takes about 30 years of smoking to develop signs of COPD....a combined series of problems....asthma, emphysema (inability to expire properly). However, stop now before you develop these problems because they are irreversible. I am a smoker and a nurse and desperately trying to stop. Jennifer

It usually occurs about 20-30 years after you start smoking. Be careful though. If you start smoking more, it could affect you in as little as 15 years.
