I live in Delaware and apparently, we have one of the highest rates of infection in the country. However, I've never actually known anyone who had it. Does anyone have any of the official estimates of how many people are HIV+ or have AIDS here in the States?

The CDC says, "At the end of 2003, an estimated 1,039,000 to 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS, with 24-27% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection."

Their citation: Glynn M, Rhodes P. Estimated HIV prevalence in the United States at the end of 2003. National HIV Prevention Conference; June 2005; Atlanta. Abstract 595.

And they even break it down by Top 10 states by incidence and prevalence of AIDS: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/basic.htm#area

In most places, HIV is not a reportable condition, so we do not have firm epidemiological data on that. However, AIDS is reportable in all health jurisdictions, which is why we have more stats on it.
