~~**Paint green - You mean by planting trees**~~
[ forgive me if i am wrong ]
If its so then why not , of course its a very good thought.
Everything is turning Grey & dull due to loss of trees.
Air pollution, heat , lack of adequate amount of rainfall & when it rains there is soil eroison, deserts & many more such
effects are the result of deforestation.
If each person plants a tree or even a small plant on roof tops,
or in their gardens (if they have any), in their schools then there would be millions of trees, the mother earth will look more greener than ever, the heat will lower down, the environment would be cooler, there would be more oxygen &
fresh air. There would be adequate amount of rain fall & our
farmer brothers can rejoice. If this work is carried on for ever,
then one day the deserts will no longer be deserts but a place
more greener & healthier, it could even have a forest ! Its not
impossible. If man can reach the moon then man can turn a
desert into a forest if he really wants to !!.
~~**By saving trees we will be saving lives**~~
Lives of both the trees & all the living creatures.
We can make this world a more better & greener place for our future generations to come.
~~** Save trees, spread awareness **~~
You are doing a noble deed my friend.
~~**God bless you**~~ :-)
~~**Spread smiles**~~ :-)

This idea would do nothing to change the amount of heat retained by the planet. The radiation already entered our atmosphere therefore has already contributed most of it's energy. Even if it were to be reflected from the surface it would still be exciting the air molecules and would most likely be reflected back down again by the atmosphere. In order for the idea of reflecting some of the Sun's radiation to prevent it from warming the earth you would need to do it before it entered earth's atmosphere. This idea has been thought of before but the task would be Gigantic. It could serve two purposes though. 1. The reflector or shield would prevent some energy from reaching the planet. 2. If the material were photovoltaic ( like a solar panel ) the solar energy could be stored or transferred to be used for something else.

A good idea, I would say. God had a reason to make most flat surfaces green and it would be wise of us to do the same, to say the least. I am sure it will have a very good effect on our enviorment, though I am not a scientist.
A capital idea Soul Doctor, Bravo.
Take care and God bless you too.

Green roofs are in use in many places - although I would not call them widespread. They offer tons of advantages over typical roofing methods, but as with most environmentally friendly technology, it costs more to install and maintain.
There are many economic benefits as well with the primary being reduced energy consumption since a green roof is a great insulator and much of the heat loss/gain in a building is through the roof. Check out the web link for a more complete list of benefits.
I don't know about the effect on roads since there are safety concerns, but parking lots could easily be made green through special construction that leaves areas where grass can grow.
I think the effect if we had a more significant effort could be enormous and would particularly reduce the negative environmental impact of the shopping malls.

I think that would be fabulous. i think it would motivate more people to be more green and it would be more aesthetically pleasing. it would be peacful and natural which is what everyone should be. Also, it would probably change the psychology of a lot of people. But it would be a positive change. With our present scenery, all we do is rush and eat and consume. However, with nature as our setting for life, maybe people will learn to slow down and enjoy the world a little bit more instead of consuming everything in site. It would be good for the animals, the envrionment, and everyone.

I would love to see that but I'm not sure the roads and sidewalks would be usable. Grass would not be a good thing seeing that under it would be dirt and after a rain would be mud.
This is interesting but I personally don't see how it could be done. Maybe all these surfaces covered with stone rather than man made concrete would work. Now these people have some good ideas that might be able to be incorporated into yours. http://www.greenroofs.org/

I have a dream that goes a step further - what if we put most of our roads underground? We could then filter the emissions before they were released into the atmosphere, the ground above could be used for plants (Increasing conversion of CO2 to O2), bicycles and pedestrians would not have to breathe in the fumes, making these forms of transport safer and more pleasant, therefore more likely to be used. Also, it would be safer for children, and for people living in high traffic areas to grow their own vegetables, reducing the need for some transport, thus further reducing emissions. (Growing their vegies on the roof -> green roof, plus food supply)
There are bricks that make a lattice like surface that could be used for car parks (above ground) where plants can be grown, and cars driven on top without killing the plants. There are also ground cover plants that grow better when walked on - eg Roman chamomile (makes a fabulous lawn for high traffic areas, and doesn't need to be mown) - great for footpaths.
The only problems I see are walking on "green" paths in stilettos - and let's face it, fashion is a powerful force; and the economics of implemention.
Keep dreaming, and sharing the dreams - someone who can do something about them might pick up on them! (Yep - I'm an optimist!!)

No direct effect on the environment. However painting all flat surfaces green would create a lot of visual problems. Which is a bad thing for car drivers. Which would create a lot of car crashes. And that situation could be interpretted as either negative to the environment (how much fumes would be realised if thousands of cars start crashing into each and exploding) or positive to the enivronment (after all the cars crash there won't be anymore of them left to pollute the air, aside form the fumes from the explosions)
Note: Transpotation vehicles are one of the highest causes for global warming and air pollution.

Fantastic idea. Like Sedum roofs on houses. The water is used by the plants and any excess runs off and is harvested and used. The Paths could be wild flower edges with a mown walkway through them. They could be mown in a different spot each week to ensure plant diversity. Imagine walking through wild flowers to get into work. Or riding on solar powered trams through a wild flower meadow.
Living Perennial food plants such as Fruit Trees could be used for sign posts and road traffic signs. Schools/hospitals/Town centers/Shopping centers could be forced to grow food producing trees and plants in order to gain planning consent.
But what about water and water plants too. Why have roads when we can have more canals and rivers. Transport all the heavy goods via canal. Ban heavy vehicles entirely from the 'road' network. Shopping Centers could float on water, preventing the need for thousands of miles of concrete and heavy machinery used for heavy earth works.
What a great idea.

it'll always have a positive effect, although not that much. therefore, i feel it must be a national effort.
a good example is singapore where majority of the streets are lined with trees, or at least green plants, even in town areas.
