You make a good point. A lot of people talk about saving energy and going green but never really do it. There are also those anti-green rascals that do a lot of blathering about how environmentalists are hypocrites. Maybe we should have a special day where everyone turns off their computers and does something good for the environment.

Why are we even talking about wasting energy in the first place?
It is CO2 emissions from certain types of power stations that need to be replaced that are the problem, not the consumers who 'waste' energy and it is the polluting power sources that we need to be going after and not those who merely wish to leave their computer running overnight for whatever reason.
You want to be green? Get a coal power plant replaced by a nuclear power plant and then you might deserve the name, simply telling people to use less of what they shouldn't need to use less of.

It is not "wasting" energy to create a dialogue on how to help find simple ways to live a more green way of life.
A simple act to make up for using the energy on the computer could be to suggest that people contact their representatives in govt. to show we support the green way of living! E-mail the representatives.

There is no simple act to offset energy used. The liberals would like you to believe there is, but there isn't. The only effective thing you can do is to actually use less energy, by turning things off. Or you could make your own energy in whatever way you consider green. You could hook up a small generator to a stationary bicycle and use that energy to run your computer. You could buy solar panels or a wind powered generator. You could buy a diesel generator and them run it only on bio-diesel. But just giving money to some company that says it will plant trees, or even planting trees yourself, will not help.

No. If you were wasting energy, you leave the computer 24/7, leaving your video games on like
forever. You should talk about the enviorment and animals more on the chatboards, not to be bossy.

I am using a laptop computer, so I am using less electricity than someone on a home computer.
If you invest in a solar charger for your car. The type used while you are on vacation to keep the battery from dieing, you can charge your laptop from the car battery and the solar panel will recharge your car battery for free. You might need to get a power inverter as well. This way you can run a laptop computer for free. I think they call this being carbon neutral. You can also charge other battery operated items this way. Anything from your cell phone to a battery powered shaver. If you use rechargeable batteries around the home this will work for them as well.

Here is a site that you can click on once a day to offset the carbon that you are creating by using your computer:
http://stopglobalwarming.care2.com/
You can also download Care2.com's toolbar. Everyday that you use the toolbar you are helping make your computer carbon neutral. Get it here:
http://www.care2.com/toolbar/download.html
The Care2 Toolbar is free, works with IE 5.0+ or Firefox 1.0.1+, requires no personal information and is very easy to install or uninstall.
It contains no spyware, adware, or malware. It has a pop-up blocker and a tool for clearing cookies, your browser cache and browser history.
It's really cool too. It has icons that are links to differnt "races" you can do. They are basically pages with buttons for differnt things like helping children, saving the rainforest, finding cures for breast cancer, etc... When you click on one of the pages and generate money for that cause, the icon on your toolbar changes color. It has many other neat features that I really enjoy.
I have been usingit for about a month or two and I love it.
You can also use the i'm chat service.
http://im.live.com/Messenger/IM/Home/?source=banner_WLM_keeptyping
"i’m is a new initiative from Windows Live Messenger™. Every time you start a conversation using i’m, Microsoft shares a portion of the program's advertising revenue with some of the world's most effective organizations dedicated to social causes. "

I would say that if we can communicate efficiently enough to be able to save more resources than we use by communicating, then this entire process will be worth it. If nobody can communicate (which takes resources) then somebody's cause may go unnoticed which may have saved more resources. The name of the game is profit: gaining more than you spend. Resources can be related to money: if not used correctly, then you will find yourself worse off than you started. But it's worth a shot because you can't live off what you only have now, just like if nobody communicated about saving resources then a little energy might be saved but not more than what would be saved if we communicated about how to save the environment.

We're not chatting, we're exchanging information. It is not hypocritical to learn, share, encourage others. Even if it were just for recreation, the amount of energy used is nothing to what we're saving by educating people
