I have a cold with a really bad cough. Sometimes, in school, I cough and can't stop for about 5/10 minutes. I try to stop coughing, but I can't. I usually can control it. But ever since yesterday, where I spend 30 minutes coughing non stop, I can't control it. I'll get a drink of water, but that won't stop. I would go to the nurse, but all they will do is give me cough drops. The next time I get one of these 'coughing sprees' what should I do so they won't last as long.

A doctor is the most important person to visit. But, from personal experience...my son had those exact same coughing spells and would have a very hard time breathing. Well, long story short and after many tests. We found out that he as allergies and asthma. So he takes a daily asthma medicine and has a breathing machine for neb treatments to keep his airways open.

Persistent cough? U got 2 options. First, take 2 8-ounce glasses of water and then place a pinch of salt underneath the tongue. Just let the salt melt in the mouth and sip the melted salt slowly. repeat as necessary.
Second, drink ginger ale. Get ginger the size of the distal part of ur thumb. Minced it and then simmer it in abt a cup of water for few minutes. Take it warm as often as U want. It is soothing to the throat and is effective for dry, non-productive, irritating cough. Got no side effects!

That condition is called PERTUSSIS or whooping cough. it is highly contagious infection caused by a bacteria which results in fits of coughing that usually end in a prolonged, high-pithced, deeply indrawn breath (the whoop).
It usually lasts about 6 weeks and has three stages: mild cold-like symptoms, severe coughing fits and gradual recovery. The cough often produces large amount of thick mucus.
There is an immunization for this but it is given to children only. The antibiotic erythromycin, clarithromycin, or azithromycin is usuallt used to eradicate the bacteria causing pertussis. Please be aware that pertussis is usually accompanied by ear infection or pneumonia.
Hope this help.

If you're just coughing without any other symptoms, you may have bronchitis or a lung infection. Go to the doctor, You may need antibiotics. OTC meds won't do anything for you if that's the case.

As you will see from the replies, it could be many things. It could well be allergies, asthma even Acid reflux, they all have much the same symptoms, The best way is for the Physician to give the diagnosis and he/she will prescribe medicine to help you. And let me tell you even the Physicians are sometimes baffled
and have to test you again, in order to come to the proper medicines to help you. Asthma can be diagnoses when you take a deep breath and then you breathe out there will be wheezing when you breathe out. Get well soon, best wishes
