Now, dogs. In the past, humans.
Having said that, there must be large areas of the world where dogs are just another type of meat.

In the beginning I would say it benefitted the dogs more because they had a more stable source of food by following humans as they travelled and hunted.

Later, (and indeed in some communities today) the relationship truly became a relationship where they mutually benefitted from each other.

Now however, it is indeed undeniable that the human benefit most from the relationship. Working dogs like Police Dogs and Seeing Eye Dogs lead shorter lives as a result of the stress and intensity of their work.

Pampered pooches on the other hand have been bred to the point where they can no longer give birth naturally, suffer from health problems and have their ears and tails clipped just to look 'more beautiful'.

The dog has had to pay too high a price to earn his title as 'Man's Best Friend'. Man has not been a good friend to him.

Ever since the first Wolf types came out of the darkness to find shelter and food by our campfire's mankind has exploited them the way we exploit everything else around us.
But in the case of our canine companions we have breed them into niche roles throughout our history they have protected us, heared our livestock, found our missing, given us warmth in our most needed hour, guided our blind and deaf, brought a smile to a dying relation, raised the alarm of a fire, killed a serpant that would have struck a helpless infant, provided transport in our harsh frozen wastes, brought us food from coursing, retrieved our kills, dived into sub-zero waters to save someone from drowning.
These are just a very small example of the many many ways these specialised companions have impacted on mankinds history without even considering the role these companions make on our mundance day to day lives.
Mankind got the best deal but you really have to wonder when you walk through the front door after a longday at work and get greated with such love and devotion, how did we ever deserve such loyalty.

I seems mostly humans though a very few special dogs are treated as family member so those have the better deal

Spend enough time here reading the questions from owners looking to profit off their dogs by breeding them, or trying to avoid spending money on a vet or wanting training advice to make their dogs vicious inorder to protect them, and those that hit/smack and kick there dogs, or want to get rid of them because they don't have time or did not want to waste money and time training them and you will understand what I mean it seem most people the ask questions here have very little regard for their pets welfare = /

Canine masters? I don't know about you, but, I OWN dogs, not the other way around. To answer your question, I think it is a mutual benefit. They offer us their skills in some areas and we offer them the protection and food the need. I will not go into the area of how much we have screwed up some breeds, that is too long of a subject.

I think that at one time the benefits were mutual. Humans provided shelter, leadership and food and dogs provided invaluable assistance in hunting plus protection.

There is a theory, however, that humans might never have survived if wolves or dogs hadn't helped them to become such successful hunters whereas wolves and dogs would have survived without us.

Unfortunately I think domestic dogs are not doing so well now. We force them to lead unnatural lives, restrict their freedom, their diet and their instincts to hunt and find their own mates.

Through selective breeding we have reduced their physical abilities and increased the incidence of genetically inherited problems.

They are often targets of abuse, neglect and abandonment. Although they have lived side by side with us for countless generations most people don't seem to understand their basic needs and behaviour.

Anyone who owns a dog and loves and cares for it might be a bit annoyed at this reply but even if you do think you are a caring owner just think - what would your dog rather being doing at this moment?

Eating kibble or catching fresh rabbit for himself? What would he rather be? A castrated neuter, or an entire male competing for and selecting his own mate? Locked in the house or kennel or free to come and go as he pleases? An obedient trained working dog or living as part of a cooperative with his own pack?

Unfortunately because of OUR lifestyle we can't turn them all loose and let them roam the streets but I do think that better care should be taken of them and stiffer penalties should be imposed for the neglect and cruelty of all domestic animals.

I think it is double sided. I believe dogs if they are in a good loving home. But then ther eis the other side where we have manipulated them exploited them and even tortured them. In those cases they would have been better off as a wolf running free. But on the good side, in a good loving home they have all the could ever want to have. My dog gets whatever he wants but it an equal realtionship because he gives me so much in return.

i think probably humans have the best deal we have manipulated the evolution of dogs to suit our needs to breed dogs which people find asthetically pleasing and can work for our needs
we decide on the dog if they are lucky they have a loving environment are well fed and looked after however in many cases they are abused malnourished and thrown out on the streets when they become too much for their owners
we have manipulated everything about the domestic dog and the fact they are loyal pets means it is easy for people to abuse them and neglect their needs

I think we did. After all mankind has messed with dogs until you have breeds that can not breed naturally, whelp naturally, or walk in the heat. We've bred dogs to have loong backs with back problems, bad hips and inverted eyelids. Doing such to any dog or animal is no favor.Unlike the dog breeders in Europe the USA allows poorly bred, unhealthy and off standard dogs to be bred and registered. BYB and Puppymills should never be allowed to be in business but the USA allows it. We've got great companions who love us no matter how we've affected their health and longevity.
