Even as a Christian, I'll give an honest answer. I know an honest answer might not be what you want to hear though. Not judging you personally. I know nothing about you. Just a lot of times, people will post these things on here just to try to "one up" people.

1) Buddhism/Hinduism: I grouped these two together because most of the readers on this board are Westerners. As Westerners, we have a horribly difficult time understanding a lot of the concepts in the Eastern Religions. It takes a lot of work to understand them.

2) Islam/Christianity: Problems arise with these traditions because they have, for most of their life, been tied up in political powers. The religions themselves are wonderful. But when you tie them in with political situations to use it to control others for less than noble purposes, it becomes a problem.

3) Atheism: It's not a religion. But the biggest problem I have seen with Atheists is the inability to discuss viewpoints that are not their own. I can just as easily say this about many Christians as well. And it's not the majority of Atheists I know...and it's not the majority of Christians that I know. (As a side note: It is the majority I know from online forums). Most Atheists/Christians I have encountered in real life are very easy to talk to. I also realize that has to do with location...I might not run into the same thing in a small town in the Bible Belt.

4) Other/Pagan religions: Too broad to specify.

"What do you infer from that? Do we still need a religion?"

I love C.S. Lewis' book "The Screwtape Letters." For those that have not read it, it is about a demon writing to a "rookie" demon. He is explaining how evil works in the world and a good point was brought up. Evil often happens under the disguise of something really good. It is often a preversion of that which is good.

Whether we need a religion or not is sort of a strange question to ask. Religion is still a huge part of our world, so it's obviously needed now. Will we need a religion in the future? That's a hard question to answer for certain. My guess is yes. But I think as a Theist who believes in God. Would love to hear what you think about it.

Great question. Whether you agree or not with my answer, hope you learned a perspective from it.

Matt

4. 2 + 2 = Jesus, world hunger? Jesus, Sore throat? Jesus
5. Not a religion but spend more time attacking a concept which doesn't exist than believers spend worshipping it.

Believe me Buddhism,Hinduism and Other pagan religions can be started by any body even an insane person can start such religions as these. Because they worship Idols, physical but none breathing man made gods... i can start that too! Its as good as don't believe in a divine being.

Islam and Christianity... have no negative points at all ... they both have a very long history more than 2000 years old. Forget the terrorists... if they knew what was in the Holy Quran... they'd never go for a Jihad.

And Christianity... if only Christians practice what they preach!

Atheists? (No comments about these guys... i believe one must be out of his mind to believe in atheists...)

Can't answer this because I believe...

Religion is political and power based

Spiritual beliefs are personal

One can have a "religion" and be "spiritual" ... as long as they don't get involved with the power plays. And if you examine those who live their lifes based on spiritual beliefs ... all of the above (except Atheism) have much in common.

1. No evidence for reincarnation and other supernatural elements.

2. Violent book, has fostered some opressive cultures, doctrine of hell is repulsive, no evidence for supernatural beliefs.

3. I don't know much about Hinduism, except that there is no evidence for their supernatural beliefs.

4. See 2.

5. Not a religion, but negatives of atheism are that it's not nearly as easy - i.e. you have to think for yourself on all things, and there is no supernatural god belief to comfort you.

6. No evidence for their supernatural beliefs. "Other pagan religions" is rather vague, btw - there's an awful lot of pagan religions to choose from.
