Using hot (like a heating pad) pack or cold (ice pack or something similar) pack. If you guys have a hot water bottle that is another good way to try and apply heat to the area.
I don't know how long this pain has been going on for but I would recommend that this family member see their dr for further evaluation.

usually back pain is caused by inflamed muscles around your spine. In this case cold treatment is best as it encourages the swelling to reduce. If the pain is joint ache, a hot water bottle would be best.
If you are unsure, try cold treatment first. If that doesn't relieve the pain at all.... try hot. Its all just a case of trial and error.

You can buy hot/cold packs from any Pharmacy.I would try the cold pack first. If that doesn't help then try the hot one.It really depends on why they have a bad back.Paramol is a good over the counter medicine to try it works better than any other.Hope they get it sorted soon.

icy-hot ointment would do the trick. or hot patches like example therma-care ... maybe a hot water bottle & a cold water bottle (be careful not tooo hot),and a a massage helps too!
If your family member is in serious/chronic pain he or she should see a Doctor it could be very serious... hope family member gets well soon

It depends. Hot is good but for right after an accident of some sort, ice is best.

try having a bath as hot as you can handle, soak for a bit, then try using a heat spray,or hot water bottle and rest.
But obviously if it gets worse go see a dr cause it might be something worse, like slipped disc or scyatica, which then he/she could be prescribed some good painkillers to help.

See a doctor and get a proper diagnosis, you could be treating him for a wrong condition and prolonging his pain. Have a good day.
