Shotokan is a very linear, traditional Japanese "hard" style and many of the techniques can be employed in a fight or self-defense situation as far as punching, kicking and striking go. Most schools and instructors will incorporate into it some other aspects of other Japanese martial arts like Judo and Ju-Jutsu for self-defense along with the those aspects of karate.

It's not so much the style it's the fighter that is effective. Not all styles match the fighter.

I've practices a blend of Shotokan, Hapkido and Judo. I take what works the best from each system and use that.

The question is, can you use what you have leaarned effectively in a fight.

Bruce Lee and his teachings have shown, for him, that a blend of styles is better than just one style. He has shown that Kung Fu alone is not the best, nor is straight karate, or "insert MA here". He adapted the best of the styles he came into contact with and made them work for him.

It's safe to say that all martial arts are effective except XMA. Shotokan is a very hard & direct style of Karate-Do it has long & deep stances to develop your legs. Some styles respectfully disagree with Shotokan's philosophy on that, saying you don't need long & deep stances to have a powerful kick.
