It's an imaginary word. Joseph Smith made it up while making up the 'translation' of Egyptian papyri purchased from a traveling mummy exhibitor in Kirtland, Ohio. His 'translation' was disputed in 1912, and again in 1967.

Kolob and it's metaphysical implications about orbits and astronomy are the result of 'new-age' astronomy of the 1830's. A popular New York newspaper article that was popularly reprinted regarding a "scientific announcement of great significance. The largest telescopes ... had seen moon dwellers, flora and fauna of curious description on the moon.."

Since Smith was attempting to make mormonism 'hip' and scientific, he dictated that gem of wisdom to his secretary Brother Huntington.

"Kolob" is not mentioned in the bible, or any Jewish writings. It is also not mentioned in the Book of Mormon. It is known only from Joseph Smith's "The Pearl of Great Price."
