Each person is unique in his/her perceptions.
It also depends on the kind of energy.
Some people's brains translate it into visions (that could include all or some of the senses), others see it as currents of light, air, or other masses.
But the simplest and most direct feeling is given to you by your own body. It can translate as thickness of air around you, or heaviness in your body, or its lightness, hot/ cold, up/down/ horizontal, or as a particular state of your mind, etc.
As I've said before - there are at least two variables: the kind of energy and the person who "listens" to it.
Edit: (after reading DazMaz's excellent post :)
A hint for "people who feel": if you can "passively" feel these things, you can also generate moods for others, soothe them and interact them in more than one way.
For example, try to evoke the feel that you had near a stream or any other body of water. Any then talk to people in this mood. You'll be surprised ;)))

I do feel energy.
Dependant on the type there is either a tingling, a bit like electricity, or - difficult to describe - as though the air or the body or whatever whatever you're touching becomes perceptibly thicker, like an edge.
Here is something you can do. . .
Stand near to a tree, a little bit outside the reach of its canpopy. Have your hands by your sides but with the palms facing forwards. Don't try to actually DO anything but let your mind be open to the idea that you might feel something.
Now, walk slowly forward with your awareness in your hands.
If you feel a kind of an 'edge', a slight sense of thickening in the air, then that is the edge of the energy field of the tree.
It's not difficult! I've taught all sorts of people to do it.
Enjoy
Jon C
Edit,
Having just read DazMaz's beautiful posting. . . I hadn't thought of 'sensing' moods and other people's pleasure, pain, etc as being energy - but they are, of course.
I also get that 'thrill' of tearful or ecstatic recognition of Truth.
So, yes, I recognise what you're saying DM.
Jon
Edit,
DazMaz again.
Yes! You can use the physical sensations of the Heart to, quite literally, follow your heart's desire. Tune in and feel how it responds to thoughts and suggestions. With a little practice it becomes obvious what your 'heart' wants.

I feel energy in different ways at different times.
Sometimes I can feel a spirits energy going through me like move meant. I sometimes can read spirits or people's energy, their thoughts just pop in my head as long as I can see them, their expression and or telepathically. Yes and smell as well with the spirits if I can't see them, or I can feel their presence. Sometimes my ear would shake before the phone rings, or have a vision, dream or my body would shake before something bad is going to happen, before it does.

Apart from the obvious, and sometimes painful, physical effects of electrical current, I do 'feel' energy on a day to day basis.
I was feeling it as I read through the various answers to your question, some, like JonC, for example I feel very strongly, as he and I seem to have a similar sense of it.
I 'work' with energy quite frequently, and to do this I usually use the receptors in the centre of the palms of my hands, I am sure that everyone has them, but most have never encountered their ability to focus on, and thereby augment this ability.
I can 'feel' pain and discomfort in others, and detect the energetic 'state' of people, animals and plant life, and dozens of other things.
How would I describe it ? Hmmm, well it has many elements to it, pain I usually feel as 'pins and needles' which can be anything from mild to quite sharp and painful, which I have learned is relative to the severity of the pain the subject is feeling. Sometimes a very harsh response can give me residual 'tingling' and slight numbness for days. General disorders feel mostly like heat, and a sort of 'jangly' feeling which is centred on the point of discomfort of the subject, this usually allows me to locate the seat of discomfort wihtout the subject telling me, which is useful because it confirms ( to me ) if I am on the 'right' track.
Amongst a group of people I can 'feel' the mood, tranquility, lovingness, fear, expectation, all the stronger emotions are clearly distinguishable.
In 'nature' I can 'feel' the harmony ( or sometimes otherwise ) of the world manifested around me, and consciously 'move' into it.
I 'feel' truth in a slightly embarrassing ( I used to, anyway, I'm getting used to it now ) way, I have a sudden rush of tears, happy tears, but tears nonetheless, which is, of course, from our society's point of view, highly inappropriate, for an adult ( not to say almost geriatric ) male.
There's lots more to this, but I've probably bored you enough by now. :-)))
Thanks Jon, me too. :-)))
Another edit :
There is one more thing that I would like to add, assuming that you're not all face-down in the gazpacho by now !
Over the last few years it has been my privilege to run a tourist excursion here in the Caribbean. On occasions I have had over 100 people on the boat. One feature that still knocks me out is that, from time to time, I can actually 'feel' the heart cords connecting the feeling centres of us all. I think it's something to do with the vacation environment, people haven't got their usual 'personal space' guards up, it is almost tangible, to me, that etheric thread that links all our hearts together.
The heart is the feeling centre, although modern 'science' has tried to mechanise it into just a 'blood pump', all the old cliches about 'heart ache', 'heart strings', 'broken heart' and so on, they all have their roots in actual feeling, and it took me until I was nearly 50 years in this body to remember that when a female of our species says "You hurt me", referring to emotional pain, they really mean physical pain, something which most of us males have had conditioned out by the end of early childhood.
OK, that's it, I promise not to add any more ....... maybe ...

Two days ago, I had felt a spirit. and I know this sounds odd, but it really made me jump.
I was lying on my bed and I dreamt of a fellow. This fellow tried to kiss me and I told him I was with someone. When I told him this, he became incensed so terribly he ran from me.
But, as I lay there, I heard footsteps coming up my stairs, and someone blew on my back as if to blow out a whole bunch of candles. I felt the wind of it, and heard the sound of the air coming from it. and it touched me so much so that I turned over in the bed to face it.
At times, my bed even vibrates.
I don't expect you to believe that, but my children have stated that there is something in the house...... I did not believe them either, -but lately....????
Your sister,
Ginger

By tuning in to what is, all there is, is energy. I will call it light energy, usually the energy is filtered threw beliefs or conditioning and can be uplifting or depressing. But the raw energy in it's natural state is love or light and it is wonder-full. ~ : )

I have felt energy. It's called "direct current" and it hurts like hell after the numbness wears off and your arm and chest stop smoking.
