A couple of months ago, this guy I worked with whom I liked very much and we got on very well, did not seem too keen to talk and when I asked if he meant that I don't call him again he said that was close to what he meant. He also said we could not be friends which was very upsetting. I then said I would never contact him again. HOWEVER, now I need him to provide a reference for me and I want to contact him to check if he has been contacted by the reference checking people because it is crucial that they contact him, but I am afraid to in-case he does not like that. I will not call him but I thought I might text him. Do you think it is ok if I text him asking him if he has been contacted by them yet? What would you do?

If you do text him or whatever, you must be sure to keep it very business like. You would have to do it during business hours. It's could be quite awkward for you, unless you are a genius at diplomacy and tact.
I don't think it's a wise thing to contact him at all.

Out of courtesy you should ask someone first if they would provide a reference before you go ahead and put their name forward- you obviously didn't and he might be seriously miffed enough not to provide one. I should leave well alone- you have already overstepped the courtesy mark here. If he has responded to the company you will know in the fullness of time.

Stay away from him honey,he obviously isn't interested and you seem to be using the reference as an excuse to text/call him...don't do it. Just forget him.

You'll have to send him a formal letter. Sounds like he's a v.jealous gf who he loves and perhaps a text form 'another woman' may cause her personal problems that im sure you would'nt wish to do.

make it formal.no texts plus you are not supposed to have his number are you?
you still have feeling or him and that's sad.
i understand that when people turn us down we cant seem to let go,its a closure issue.
find you re soon OK?
that way you can stop thinking about him.
good luck.
