The geographical location of Sydney means that on days with a high pressure system over the top, photochemical smog collects over the city producing a brown haze. This is the worst air pollution in Australia but by world standards it is quite mild. Bushfires near cities can produce a lot of smoke which can cause some problems.

All cities have some air pollution, it can't be avoided with so many motor cars, but the air is very clean outside the cities.
