What's really scary is, a lot of them think their eternal salvation depends on it. This Jesus character, who they've never met, supposedly told a bunch of backwater Palestinians that in order to come to him you had to hate your parents, friends, brothers and sisters, and even themselves. Of course, we can neither confirm nor deny that this Jesus fella actually said this, since it wasn't written until several decades after he died.
Oh, almost forgot. Of course they don't find it insulting, they love InvisiDad more than they love their parents and children too, that's why some of them are willing to kill their kids and anyone else if the voices in their heads tell them to.

Consider the theology behind it. Some (but not all) churches teach that God comes first, and everything else, including family, is secondary. After all, Jesus told people to leave their families and follow Him. People have asked on this site before whether parents love their children more than God, and quite a few people said that God comes first, before their children. So to find that the children to also love God more than family would not be particularly surprising.

An imaginary father is always better than a real one. He will never beat you or abandon you, not even in nightmares.

The idea disturbed me as a kid, especially when my own grandparents told me I had to love God more than my family! I was so confused!

Whats insulting?
God is more than we are or ever will be. Its only right to love God more than you love your parents.
You are going to love some people more than others. Do you love your parents or someone more than you love me? I would think you do.
This is the same logic. Even though love from parents is important and right, Gods love is eternal. My mother and father are not the ones that are going to get me where I need to be spiritually.
So to answer your question, Its only right to love God more. This does not mean you have to loath your parents...

No, I'm siding with the father on this one. That ungrateful kid's probably doing pot or meth or something.
