I will be starting nursing school this fall, and I am excited about it. But I have heard that doctors are ALWAYS condescending and rude to nurses. I am uppity, so this may not be the profession for me if that's the case.

I volunteer at a hospital and I often hear the nurses talking about how such and such doctor is a total asshole. But then I also hear them raving about others. I think doctors probably have a reputation for being rude and condescending because people who go to med school are more likely to come from affluent and privately educated backgrounds, as a rule, so there is a greater chance they will be 'infected' with the conservativism and arrogance typically associated with that class. But I also think that is less and less the case now, because the education system has tried to ensure that students are not disadvantaged by background, so med-schools are less likely to be overrun with old money. I'm sure remnanents of that old hierarchy still remain in the profession today though. But then, what doctor wouldn't relish the exhilarating sense of power and status after 7 years at med-school?

I agree with the other answers, particularly the comments about being Uppity. This field has a pecking order and it has a "you must prove yourself" period....why? Because this is one of the few fields where small mistakes can have very large consequences (like death). And when the dust settles, the ultimate responsibility falls on the MD--that's a tremendous responsibility. There really is no place to be uppity--you need to have mutual respect, communication, and a desire to do the best thing for the patient. Trust must be earned.

Some are some aren't, but then again I worked with nurses who treat their CNAs like crap, and others who were really good. It alll depends on the person. The smart doctors are good to their nurses, because in medicine you need a good team around you, and when you get along with people they are easier to work with. You should learn to brush things off though, because even the nicest people are going to be a little grumpy after a twelve hour shift where everything went insane.

I think it actually depends more on the nurse than the doctor. The doctor depends highly on the nurse and if the nurse knows how to make his/her time most efficient without telling them how to do their job and shows a great level of competence - then the respect will build fast and the nurse will be treated well.

Every doctor is different. Some are great to work with, others are jerks. Just like any other group of people.
Be warned, however, many doctors are very protective about their patients, and when a patient is not doing well, the doctor may tell you to get something or do something, and due to the intensity of the situation, he does not have the time to be nice and friendly about it.

It depends on the the doctor. Anesthesiologists, cardiologists and surgeons tend to be the ones most full of themselves. I find GP's, pulmonologists and PA's to be the nicest. It all depends. If you're nasty to them, they pick up on it and are nasty to you, but if you go out of the way to be nice to them, they remember it and treat you in kind.

However, if you readily admit that you're uppity, then being with patients may NOT be the job for you. You're constantly dealing with whining, needy patients. Some are addicted to narcotis and call you every 2 hours when you're running busy for pain medications and will call you and call you until you give it to them. You've got confused old people who will rip out their IV's every few hours or yank on their foleys and cause bleeding. You have to not lose your temper with these people but be full of compassion, patience and understanding. You have to care for these people and treat them with dignity. Get uppity with the patients or their family or other staff and you'll be bounding job to job in no time.

No they aren't. There are always a few jerks, but doctors really depend on you and for the most part value your skills and knowledge.

If you are smart and do your job well, you will find most doctors are very nice. If you are incompetent they will be all over you.
