I'm confused as to where and who they are fighting in the scene after they graduate and Maverick shows up late. I know it's the enemy, but is it mock or where they actually called up to dog fight?...Thanks. Great movie by the way.

It was suppose to be the Russians. (The F5s in the movie have red stars on them.) SInce the movie was made in the heat of the cold war, this was the only enemy that would make sense as far as the movie is concerned.

After graduating from NAS Mirimar's Naval Fighter Weapons School, Mav, Icman, Slider, Hollywood, and Wolfman were dispatched to Maverick's carry to deal with the threat posed by enemy MiG's. They were no longer at Mirimar training put actually back with the fleet defending the ship.
