many trees will tend to grow toward high power cables if you notice the tops will bend and be aimed right at a power line. the trees with vines are the worse and can bring down a power line.

The trees bend towards the light, out of the shadows of the other trees. You probably see this more often on the side of the road, as the road constitutes as a wide space of free light, as far as those in the plant world are concerned.

Trees need sunlight to photosythesize and provide themselves with nutrients. Even growing straight up, the lower parts are somewhat blocked from the sun by other trees. Therefore, they grow towards the open road so that they can escape the other shadows and be exposed to more sunlight due to the lack of obstructions over the road.
