Doug is correct - the transformers and electrolytic filter capacitors are way smaller. Equipment can be greatly condensed in size and be lower in weight. Modern switching power supplies run at anywhere between 20000 Hz and 40000Hz and are smaller still.

You just said it; 'If its needed'. 400 Hz is used quite frequently in aircraft since the size and weight of magnetic components (transformers, etc.) are much smaller at higher frequencies.
