Head lice, Pediculus humanus capitas, are small parasitic insects. They live on people's heads (or sometimes their eyebrows or facial hair), and feed on our blood.

Head lice are most commonly encountered among children of pre-school or elementary school-age, but they can infest anyone, or any age, of any race, and of any socioeconomic background.

Head lice are most commonly spread from an infested person to a non-infested person by close physical contact or by sharing of hats and other clothing. They cannot jump, hop, or fly from one person to another. Occasionally, however, they may crawl from an infested person's head to another's, or they may fall onto furnishing or carpeting, and wait there for another head to infest.

Graphic courtesy USCDCHead lice begin their lives as eggs, often called nits, that are attached to individual hairs, very close to the scalp, using a strong cement that the mother secretes. Adult female head lice can lay as many as eight eggs per day.

The nits hatch in about a week, beginning a rapid period of gradual metamorphosis which will culminate in their reaching adulthood in as little as 10 days.

Once mature, head lice typically for about a month or so, during which each female may lay as many as 250 eggs. So if untreated, a head lice infestation can grow very rapidly.

All of the other responses were good, but I know in my area, if you have children and you don't treat it, after a certain amount of time your case would be sent to the district attorney's office. At least if your kids are in school. I read that in the paper they sent home about head lice. Besides, why in the world wouldn't you treat it?

Head Lice will travel anywhere there is hair. So imagine those places on your body and they will get there. If you become heavily infested which WOULD happen, they become so numerous that they are visible to nearly everyone. The itching would become so severe your scalp would likely bleed and become infected. NIX works awesome and is cheap. Good Luck!

They multiply and spread very quickly over everything, such as fabrics and other humans. If you let it go long enough, then a very minor hair loss could occur.

I think they make more. Then they look for others in your house and that get close to you. Then people start scratching their heads and look at you like you the sh*t.

They have a feast. They would thrive and multiply and become very itchy for their host.
