It all starts with your diet. The saying "you are what you eat" couldn't be more true. If you couple a solid, healthy diet with some excercise 3-4x week, you'll be on your way to losing the pounds.
Cutting out butter, mayo and sugars are a big part of slimming up. Keep tabs on the % of saturated fat in your foods (keep it low) and cut some (not all) carbs. Your body still needs carbs, so don't deprive yourself. Just cut em' back. If you increase your fluids, your stomach will feel fuller too....but you still need to eat so don't starve yourself!
Alcohol will pack on the pounds too. The calories are high, and I even noticed a huge difference after 2 weeks when I cut out the wine that I was having with dinner.
Eat healthy and do some cardio, you'll see some positive results.
good luck.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

You can choose from bicycling, aerobic dance, swimming, walking, and stepping. Your choice will be decided by your physical condition, your history, your interests and your goals. Switch between 2 or more types of aerobic exercises for an excellent workout. You can also alternate between high impact and low impact aerobics. High impact aerobics are harsh on your body and can cause injury. But when you alternate between the two types of aerobics, your chances of injury and overuse of specific muscles decrease.
