Ok first of all, I am athiest so I dont need athiests flooding the wall with "there is no hell." One can seek understanding without believing.

From what I understand, Islam's perception of hell is torturous not because God is punishing them but because the sinner brought the torture upon themselves. What are other religion's take on this or if you want to correct or elaborate on my understanding. Thanks.

Judaism views "hell" (genenah) as a place of spiritual purification.

In that the soul cannot properly receive its reward as long as their is some spiritual imperfection. As such hell acts as a place where the soul is purified so it is ready for the afterlife.

That being said almost everyone spends some time in hell.

Naturally if a person is truly evil and they do not deserve any reward they are punished for the measure of their crimes, and then cease to exist.

Oh and thank you for asking the question in such a polite manner.

Most Christians would disagree with this statement. Jesus was very specific in what He said about Himself: "The Father and I are One", "I came down from Heaven", and "I am God's son" are all quotes specific to Jesus. There are many others. Mohammed's best arguement against the New Testament is that "the apostles somehow misunderstood Jesus" and that they "got it wrong". If, then, Jesus is NOT the Messiah, the Christ, and the Son of God (as He claimed, and the apostles preached), then the entire New Testament is based on a LIE. The New Testament and the Koran are mutually exclusive texts. Either NT is correct about Jesus, and the Koran is a lie, or the NT is a lie, and the Koran is correct. Both cannot co-exist, and be "both from God". God would not contradict Himself, nor would He choose "one" set of holy scriptures for protection, and exclude the rest from corruption! The New Testament and the Koran disagree on who Jesus is, and what Jesus did. Since both claim divine inspiration, but have conflicting messages, only one (at most) can be correct. That makes one inspired by the Holy Spirit, and the other, inspired by......hmmmmm? Think about it. Demons can inspire things also! Especially lies: that is their speciality.

There are also 7 layers of hell and some ppl won't stay there forever, some will eventually go to paradise. It's kinda weird to me the way you said it...it is a punishment decreed by God but you do bring it upon yourself....

i may add more if somebody else's reply reminds me of something
