We ex-Christians reject the bible for many reasons. For many of us the main reason is that we have read it and found the murder, torture, slavery, rape, etc to be disagreeable to us. We don't listen to Christian preaching because we would not want to worship a deity, or any being, who ordered these acts committed, if this deity existed. We do not believe this deity exists because these acts are atrocities against humanity.

I can understand how you might view it that way. Being an open minded individual, I'm sure you wont mind if I disagree. In my opinion, one of the previous answerers brought up an excellent point "the bible is written in very plain English." Well, actually it isn't. In my personal studies I have come to realize how close-minded or short sighted we can be when reading the Bible. We read it as if an English speaking contemporary westerner had written it.

When reading and studying the Bible it is highly important to remember that we're dealing with ancient cultures who were in no ways "western" in their ideas, world view, understanding or style of writing. Anyway, I just find it very important to approach the Bible with an open mind with the intent of first understanding the culture in which it was written and the writing styles that were being implemented before making any translational decisions.

Whats it matter what the Bible says then? If you don't think he exists, I don't see how the Bible is relevant. Why would you be outraged by something that you don't think happened. It would make more sense for you to say "I cant support this God that I think is immoral". So, no I guess I don't understand your reasoning, or how you can have two arguments where one invalidates the other. I think that your just searching for a reason not to believe. I think you do believe that God exists and you do not want to follow his laws. I think that you know that Christians are good people and do not commit atrocities.

Is abortion acceptable to you? Do you think that abortion is an atrocity against humanity? Since 1973, seventy million and more babies have been sacrificed to the enemy of God, Satan, who masquerades as an angel of light and promises the world a New Age. Ex-Christians won't listen to preaching about repentance and about the grace of God that washes our sins away but they will listen with ears wide shut to new age propaganda while death hides in the wings.

One must seek to understand that God met the human race where it was at...where it had fallen to. Then slowly tried to form it and prepare it. Then Jesus the second Person of the Trinity became Man--he entered into our suffering he was the object of mans cruelity...etc. But he Is Risen. He is the Way the Truth and the Life. Leading out of the darkness of what man does to man.

Read the Sermon on the Mount. Gaze at the Crucifix. Jesus shows us his love! He enters into our suffering --the suffering we caused and uses it as a sign of love for us.

I understand that part. But the thing I don't understand is why you feel like you have to change us. I have had a sure witness from the lord and was given a understanding about the things written in the Old Testament. God is unchanging and full of love and forgiveness. However he does use people to do his work on earth and when a people are full of inequity he will step in and chastise them.

First of all...you really need to understand something: There is no such thing as an "Ex-Christian". When you are "truly" born again, you won't become an ex.

As for you disagreeing with God...well, He is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Who are we to argue with what God commanded His armies to do?

Those who God said to destroy were very wicked, even sacrificing their own babies to false gods. Their sin was deep.

Anyway...even though we may give you answers to your questions...God does not defend what He did...and He doesn't need to. He is God.

When you stand before Him, you won't be questioning Him...in fact, you will be speechless.

Anyway...hopefully this sheds some light.

Actually the real reason you do not believe is as it is written, " the fool has said in his heart there is no God,
as well " I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate"

To know the one and true Living God, and to turn you back on him....

Believe only the Truth ... but seek it diligently

The PLAN of the ONE is mysterious, but it is a just plan nonetheless.

I wish that fire did not cause pain....but its burning is necessary....that there was no darkness, yet it, too has purpose. Many things in this life are disagreeable

Belief or disbelief that something (GOD) exists will not cause its existence to be dependent upon your beliefs....HE is.

He has created all things....LIGHT and DARKNESS.... This is a mysterious thing, but True. His plan is complex we cannot know it. God is awesome/fearful

But HE is GOD

And we are not.

I don't believe because the idea of a deity is ridiculous. Its based upon pure speculation and superstition. The concept is hilarious.

Yes I can understand what you are saying. And while I disagree with you (as do some of my Jewish friends ) I can sympathize and understand how you could feel that way.
