Try checking Haze Gray and Underway's FAQ as well as with the Navy. You can also try DANFS (Dictonary of American Naval Fighting Ships) as it should have a bit of historical info, some of which may be 1945, and NavSource which may have some photos for you.

By the way, the only ship I could find as an escort that would even fit the hull number was DE-344 USS Oberrender, a destroyer escort.

You have the wrong info. No such ship in the Naval Vessel Registry. However,I believe this is what you might be looking for.

You got a lot of good answers. Here is a site with the ships history in case you didn't get it.

And here is one with a message board from crew members and relatives. http://www.desausa.org/discus/messages/3/148.html?1161460518

Your numbers are wrong or something, but go to this site and state here. You can identify the ship. Once that is done, you can continue to search through several sites.

Good luck.
