AIDS, or cancer.
I do not know anyone who has cancer, or AIDS. I know of ONE person who died from colon cancer at age 31, but i did not know her before she died.
Is this rare? You hear about these 2 diseases all the time, and how many people are dying from them, but, I live in a pretty big town, know lots of people, and this has not affected my life in any way (except to be safe).
I know I could go SEE someone with these diseases, but I don't know (nor want to) anyone personally with any type of fatal diseases. (my mom does have Chrons......).

No, I was misunderstood. I said I don't WANT to know anyone with either disease not out of shallownes, but because that would mean someone I know and or love had that disease. Not because i am afraid or shallow......

I know hundreds of people with HIV/AIDS and many with Cancer. My best friend died of both just a few months ago. Knowing people personally with these diseases is a really hard thing to handle at times.

I have MET people who had AIDS, and my wife had breast cancer--it went into remission, fortunately. I had an uncle who died from lung cancer.
I go to church with several people who have or who have had cancer. One of our elders died of cancer a few months ago.
I think a lot depends on how old you are. I'm 66 years old and I've known a lot of people who are older than me who have reached the stage where degenerative diseases hit them.
I've also outlived a lot of people who were my age or younger. Automobile accidents claimed some. Quite a few died of heart disease. A few died in the Vietnam War--of which I am a veteran--and some died of such things as cirrhosis of the liver, suicide, and at least one was murdered.
My father died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as either ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. I don't know of anyone who has lived or will live forever, although I would like to.

I have a mother and brother who died from cancer. On my dad's side, there are 7 who have had cancer, all but 1 died. On my mom's side, there are 5 who have had cancer, 2 have died. I knew some people who had aids, that have passed. You are lucky not to have been exposed to the pain that goes with these diseases.

I don't think it's rare. It's probably more that people don't talk too much about it, or at least about AIDS. I know a few people with cancer currently and a few people that have already passed away from it, such as my grandmother and a previous boss. I also know a few of the lucky survivors, like my best friend who had childhood leukemia. I know a guy with AIDS and I'm sure there are more that I'm not remembering at the moment. One of my friends has a lot of friends with AIDS but he works with AIDS groups. They're very sad, painful illnesses and I hope a cure comes about soon.

Yes, I currently know several people who have either AIDS or HIV. And I lost several relatives to various cancers.
If you have been fortunate enough not to have been personally touched by either, then you should get on your knees every day and thank God for His blessings on you.
As for your not even wanting to know somebody because of any particular disease, that is so sad. It tells me that you are a very shallow, self-centered person.
Go volunteer just one week-end at a local AIDS Outreach program in your city, or even better, collect up a few toys, coloring books, and games, and take them to the cancer ward of your local Childrens hospital and pass them out. Spend the day with them. I promise that if you do either, you would learn more about living.

I know 4 people that have aids. Three of them are from non-bisexual relations. With the advancement of medicine for aids there are probably a lot more people that have it but you just don't know it. You can live a very happy, healthy lifestyle if you take your medications. It's not a disease that people like to announce that they have. I also have multiple relatives and friends that have dealth with cancer. Be happy that you don't know anyone with either disease. They are tough diagnosis to deal with.

Yes to knowing someone with cancer. No to knowing anyone with HIV or AIDS. However, I'm not sure if people always tell people about these issues. They may consider them fairly personal.
We have a fair amount of cancer cases in our area. I drink bottled water and hope for the best.
