Why do people assume I haven't read it? I've read the Bible. I took notes. I was unimpressed. I quote it all the time to Christians that quote it to me. If I quote the Bible supporting abortion, why would you assume I've never read the Bible?

Scott B - That was true. Most of my questions are 4 months old or more. I've taken a deeper interest in Christianity and read the KJV of the Bible. You'll notice I have three questions that are less than 4 months old. Good try though.

Randy G - I do partially agree with you. But people are failing to see the hypocrisy of the statement. If a Christian can take a quote from the Bible to support a point, why is it not ok for a non-Christian to quote the Bible to support a point? They are both doing the same thing (taking snippets of the Bible), but one is wrong and the other is ok. It makes no sense.

Kelli M - You just did it! Based on my view of the Bible as fiction, you make a baseless claim that I have not read the Bible.

Mostly, the people who assume you haven't read the Bible because you point out the negative things in it haven't read it themselves. Truth is, many Christians just go by word of mouth --- they believe what someone told them is in the Bible. It doesn't help, of course, that this is how Christianity was formed and maintained through the reformation. I digress.
Good church going Christians listen to what us preachers preach from the pulpit, read the passages assigned in Bible study and, often, fail to read the Bible themselves. So, when it is pointed out that the Bible demands, for example, a woman who is raped in the city to be put to death, they insist it isn't so. Really, it's a failure to think for themselves...the sheep mentality of Protestant, US Christianity.

I'm not sure what you mean by "negative". If negative simply means things in the Bible that you disagree with, well you are entitled to your opinion, and God is obviously entitled to his (not a good idea to argue with God, though, since he is bigger).

If your idea of negative is to take a single sentence out of its literary, historical, and cultural context in order to force some silly meaning upon the text for the purpose of ridicule, well, "straw-man" arguments are the last resort of a losing debater. I am a lawyer, and other lawyers do this silly trick all of the time when (mis) quoting legal precedent, thinking that I will be too lazy to look up the full quote (Including the last little part that they "accidentally" omitted that changes the meaning of the whole passage. Oops!).

When you are quoting something to support your position, you might as well be honest and quote all of the relevant parts of the passage. Just because someone believes differently than you doesn't always mean that he is stupid or lazy, so don't underestimate your opposition.

If you are caught lying once, then that makes everything that you just said look untrustworthy --which means you have just lost the debate as far as the larger audience is concerned (I.E.: all of the people reading this, who don't bother to respond). I assume that is why you post rhetorical questions in the first place -- to prove a point to your larger audience; otherwise you wouldn't have bothered to post anything at all.

Saying you've read the Bible is doubtful since you clearly haven't understood the passages you quote. I'm calling you out on this one, it's not that I think there aren't non believers who have read the Bible, but based on your questions, I just know you aren't one of them. You are an internet junkie who pulls quotes off of a Bible search engine. You have no background or understanding of Biblical teaching. Don't try to pull the "I've read it..." thing on us.

I've been down this road. you cant talk rationally to Christians about religion. they are too brainwashed, most cannot come up with a single thought of their own. i am speaking about fundies of course. just let it go and when they start spewing their propaganda, laugh, because arguing will do no good, its like talking to a brick wall. an interesting thing about Christianity is its easy. it was spread through Europe to control people who didn't know better. now before someone says "NO its hard to be a good christian!"..lets think about it, what is more easier than having complete instructions on how to act ,what to say, what to believe. its all black and white, and in most cases an extreme is easier than moderation. they dont know how to think for themselves or question...why was it so easy being a child?..because you always had boundaries, you knew what you could and couldn't do and if you did wrong you got punished...why is it so hard to be an adult?..because you must make decisions for yourself, you dont have anyone to fall back on...this is my opinion of it anyway.

I can prove anything with scriptures--but is it hermeneutically correct. If you took notes then you know context is more important that the word spoken.

Where does it mention ARKANSAS in the Bible--its in their. All i have to do is misquote a little.
Quoting and knowing the meaning is two differing things

If I point out the negative things were at "PSALMS 149"from number 1 to number 9,it stated that praise his name with "dancing","play drums" and "harps" in praise of him.Let them shout aloud as they praise God,with their sharp swords in their hands. To defeat the nations and to punish the peoples; to bind their kings in chains, their leaders in chains of iron,to punish the nations as God has commanded. This is the victory of God's people.

Ummmmm....how about telling us the point of this post?

You say you have read the Bible.
You say you are unimpressed.
You say you can quote the Bible.
You say you are wiser & smarter than anyone...especially believers.

Well so did/can Satan...but Jesus was not bothered...impressed...or moved.

So your point is.....?

Because their life is so boring, they need to constantly convert other people into their own self righteous belief system. By constantly forcing them to recruit others it give them purpose. And most of them have been brainwashed by their churches so babdly that if you don't go to church then you are too EVIL to have READ the Bible.

Because they feel you must have twisted it or not have read enough to understand in order for you to take such a stand on an obvious issue.
