It depends on how far away the astronaut went. If he was a believer on Earth, it would take something really profound to make him stop believing -- like finding a microbe on Europa.

Tom Servo. Shut up -- I miss MST3K.

Most likely it would depend if he saw a UFO or had a close encounter with God through the magnificence of his creations.
I'm thinking that if he left an Atheist, he would return an Atheist. A Christian would return with a greater appreciation and Love for God. When looking down at Earth from space, I think one would see how insignificant one human really is, but to God, every hair is counted on our head. Now that is pretty precious and significant. One would see space from a insignificant point of view and one from a overwhelming attitude of gratitude. This is why Jesus said , it is better to save the one than the 99. Without the one , 100 is not a whole.

I believe that anyone that sees the awesome creation of stars and moons, and planets, and galaxies would have to become a Christian, or another religion that believes there is only one God - the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth, the Self-Subsisting, the Almighty, the Merciful............

Can the One the created humans be constristed to creating life on just one planet?

Can the One that created galaxies with 800 billion suns be confined to sending just one messenger?

"The sea of materialism is at flood tide and all the nations of the world are immersed in it. It is my hope that the fish will rise to the surface, so that they may behold other wondrous aspects of creation; for the people are like unto the fish swimming in the deep - ignorant of the rest of the universe. May they be transformed into birds of the air and soar in the nether atmosphere! May they break all bonds of limitation, so that they can observe from the height the lordly processions of infinite creatures; they will see the blue heavens studded with luminous stars, rivers flowing with salubrious water, gardens bedecked with fragrant flowers, trees adorned with blossoms and fruits, birds singing songs of light, humanity ever striving forward, every atom of existence breathing life and force - the universe of God a wonderful theatre upon the stage of which every created thing plays its part."

Some could become even more spiritual. Some people see Nature and say "See, I told you there was a God".

Some see the Universe, and all of it's beauty and intricate workings, and they see God.

If they were Christian on earth, I can't see why this would shatter their belief.

If they were Atheists on earth, I don't see any experiences that would alter their beliefs, either.

I am sure they will come home with the same convictions as when they left.

Upon reentry of Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, William Anders began to quote the first chapter of Genesis. In the beginning God created Heaven and Earth.... He was followed by the other crew members quoting up to verse 10 of the same chapter.
Here's a link where you can hear the actual broadcast.

I have my doubts that anyone could see the aw some creation of God, as they saw it, and not realize there was a great creator who set it all in the heavens.

Large numbers of our Astronauts were and are Bible believing Christians.

On Christmas Eve, 1968 the first time humans went to the moon, they read Genesis chapter 1 back to us from space.

There is a book titled, "Last Man on the Moon", read it.

Neither because according to the Vedas no one can go to the moon or other planets by aircraft. Why? Because they are heavenly planets and one can only go their with the proper Karma and not in these gross bodies. Their bodies are more subtle and these bodies would not survive there. Nice try though. For info on all planetary systems and everything go to srimadbhagavatam.org/... read it on line. Totally amazing stuff, and facts not fiction.

Scientists tend to be atheists. The more you learn about the universe, the less you need a god to explain it.
