I used to not eat them, but lately I have been. How bad is it to eat eggs if you are a Hindu?

What are all the reasons that many Hindus avoid eggs?

Thanks.

Hindus are basically VEGETARIANS. They do not take any non-vegetarian food including Egg. Hindus are against killing any animals for the purpose of eating as they consider the Vegetables and vegetarian products as very good for health and contain all nutrients our body require. Egg is supposed to be the embryo of the Chicken and it amounts to killing. This has become tradition for ages and so Hindus do not take eggs.

But now a days almost all Hindus excepting Brahmins take non-vegetarian food. Even some brahmins live in western countries and westernized Hindus living in India take non-vegetarian food.

There is no hard and fast rules or restrictions for eating egg or any non-vegetarian food and if one like I feel he can consume...

This is hilarious.
What has eating any kind of food to with Hinduism?

India is one of the largest producer and consumers of eggs and their parents too.

A portion of Hindus are vegetarians. An aspirant is advised against meat eating as it sometimes interferes with deep spiritual practice.

The priest class are vegetarians.

Though I'm not a Hindu, myself, I've studied their Religion and have a very deep respect for the Vedic Hinduism.

First of all, I think you should appreciate the fact that Hinduism does not have the "Thou shalt not..."

They go more by the "Is it right that you ....?" kind of rationale.

Now, the vegetarianism move, in Hinduism is based upon "Is it right that you kill a living being just to eat it's meat, while you have all these wonderful vegetables and fruits to feast upon?"

An egg is the embryo of a chicken, the unborn child. Is it right for you to eat it?

Peace.

hindus don't eat meat as a part of their religion - it forbids it. my guess is that the egg is considered meat (and if you think about it, it IS). you're basicly eating a chicken fetus. i personaly eat a little of everything because that is what human bodies are meant to do. eat a balanced diet and you'll be fine. however if you are a hindu, the same thing applies except you shouldn't eat meat. have fun

While I am not Hindu I would not eat eggs. It is still a chicken though not fully birthed.

If you feel bad about it, since Hinduism is really concerned with vegetarianism, you can go with egg substitutes at health food stores, they really aren't that bad.

From a Hindu website:

Food is the source of the body's chemistry, and what we ingest affects our consciousness, emotions and experiential patterns. If one wants to live in higher consciousness, in peace and happiness and love for all creatures, then he cannot eat meat, fish, shellfish, fowl or eggs. By ingesting the grosser chemistries of animal foods, one introduces into the body and mind anger, jealousy, anxiety, suspicion and a terrible fear of death, all of which are locked into the the flesh of the butchered creatures. For these reasons, vegetarians live in higher consciousness and meat-eaters abide in lower consciousness.
