...that when you question Christianity, a Christian will support their answer with Bible quotes, but if you try to prove a point with Bible quotes, they say you need to read the whole Bible to understand?

This was in reference to a question I read where someone was quoting Matthew to prove that Jesus and God are separate beings.

God's Child - that's exactly what Christians are doing when they're quoting the Bible. There's absolutely no difference between one person quoting the Bible or another person quoting the Bible. Why is it ok for some people to justify their ideas with the Bible, but it is not ok for others to justify their ideas with the Bible?

The Bible is like any other book. If you pull part of it out of context and try to make it say something it doesn't say, then you're not really "quoting the Bible to prove a point".

Those of us who have read it and study it are at somewhat of an advantage because we can recognize the lack of context and we point that out. Those of you who just toss out a verse are like babies swimming in the deep end without your floaties. It's real clear to the rest of us that you're drowning.

Simple case in point are all the questions that quote from the Old Testament Law and ask why Christians aren't keeping that particular Law. They don't have any understanding of who the Law was given to (not to Christians) and what the Christian's relationship to the Law is.

As far as Jesus and God being separate beings, you need to read John 1: "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.... and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." Jesus is "The Word" that was both with God and was God. He became flesh and came to earth. He prayed to "his father" which is how he identified God, now that he was a being distinct from God. At his death he was separated entirely from God, then reunited with him at his resurrection.

Probably because, as with any book, anyone who hasn't read the book, can't judge it or it's content by taking a few out of context quotes and trying to make them fit a lame assertion. Since several Christians have read, studied, and understood the Bible, they can quote it correctly to give support for why we believe what we do. I agree that if you don't believe in the Bible, then quoting it to you probably doesn't do much good, but then you must admit, if you don't believe it, you probably shouldn't quote it either.

Because when people are trying to use the bible to mis-prove something about God, they only take the portion that they want out of it and not the entire passage or the context in which it was written.

Some Christians support their argument with Bible quotes. That's because they believe it to be an irrefutable source.

I also believe the same, but find that here it is more effective to speak from principle and explain things a bit more. We can get into references if you wish.
