Here are the verses: Quran Surah 5 verse 33 and 34.

Quran 5:33 is an important verse to understand which even most muslim don't understand. "Making mischief" according to the Quran is sufficient to warrant imprisonment, mutilation, assassination, and crucifixion. It applies to those who adamantly reject Islam, and can potentially cause others to do so (e.g. christian evangelicals trying to convert muslims to christianity). They are to be humiliated and maimed - having their hands and feet cut off - so that they might be disgraced. Note (to muslims) that surah 5 is the last surah revealed to Muhammad, so these seemingly harsh words weren't abrogated. The 5th surah is Islam's legacy.

Quran 5:34 provides a way out. It describes that if is repentant, you would be okay. It is important to note the repentance requires surrender to Islam, obedience to Muhammad, and the acceptance of Allah. That's why the King Fahd edition of The Noble Quran inserted the words "and become Muslims" inside the parenthesis. That is the most commonly understood term amongst muslims for repentance. One cannot be repentant if one rejects islam. This must be done by the non-believers before muslims overpower them, that means it is no use to convert to islam after muslims conquer you, you have to do so before that.
