We have a large house with stairs and a pool. We cannot decide on any of these dogs. We want a companion dog that does not need much exercise (a good inside romp). Not much grooming either (how many times a yorkie has to be groomed?)

Mini Dachshunds and Yorkshire Terriers both will have trouble with the stairs. Dachshunds are prone to bad backs, and yorkies are prone to bad knees, so both would have to be carried up and down the stairs. I'm not sure about the other two.

The pool will be a problem for all of them, because they are all toy dogs that will not have the body strength to pull themselves from the pool, and will drown. Fence off the pool, or keep the puppy inside regardless of the breed, and keep supervised when outside. Not sure about the other breeds, but most yorkies love to swim in pools though.

Yorkies don't need a lot of exercise, and Mini Doxies need a little more. Not sure about the others.

In terms of grooming, they are all easy. Doxies and Bostons don't need to be trimmed at all, just brushed. Yorkies and Shnauzers need to have their coats trimmed every month or every few months. Besides that, they just need to be brushed. Yorkies don't need much grooming, just brushing every few days. People think its harder than it is to take care of a yorkie.

I would get a Boston terrier if I were you. They are short haired and are very low maintenance. They can get their exercise inside easily.

Stairs are not a good thing for a Dachshund to climb, they always have back problems.

Yorkies may be small but they have loads of long hair.

Mini Schnauzers are great dogs, but they still require a bit more grooming than a Boston terrier and they need more exercise.

i own a small breed bog, and have owned very large dogs as well. any of your breeds listed can thrive even in an apartment so the size of your home doesnt apply to these dogs. as long as you play with them they will have plenty of room to exercise running around your home.(taking them out to the park or river or whatever is great for them too of course and they will enjoy that). having stairs and a pool is bonus for them, i have a pool and my small dog loves it as well as having stairs at my last home. the stairs provided exercise for her that i didnt even consider. as far as grooming, a yorkie is a very high upkeep dog and has to be groomed at least 2 times a week, and all require periodical vet check ups for various reasons ranging from ears to eyes to skin and bones, of these dogs the yorkie and b. terrier require the most grooming and vet attention

Boston Terrier hands down. I grew up with a Boston, and they are the best little companion dogs. They think they are a people. Be careful, though, of where you get it. Inbreeding has cause a lot of heart trouble.

A yorkie is a long-hair and requires much grooming. A boston terrier is a short-hair and does not.

I have a mini-dachshund and I love him! He is the cuddliest dog I have ever had. When I come home he jumps into my arms to greet me. I love it!

He's pretty good, too. He likes to play, but doesn't bother you when you are busy - just goes and sleeps. He's pretty good with kids, unless they poke at him a lot.

We take him to the vet to get his nails cut and get checked for heart worm, but that's it. He never sheds or needs a hair cut.

I have a yorkie/maltese, and dood I have to brush her tons. Plus most of them are tiny; and a big house with stairs is not good for the pookie's back and bones once he/she gets older. Stick with a non-sheding medium size dog.

Boston Terrier sounds like a good match for you.

Bostons are great and they have short hair so less grooming is needed also the have a great temperament and are easily trained.
