Our 3-month old male kitten, Lenny, is just an absolutely lovable kitten and we cuddle him and he falls asleep on us all the time, and he seems to love us but he doesn't purr. Could it just not occur to him, or could there be an absence of the purr mechanism?

Some cats choose not to purr because they have no meaning to. They love you, but they choose to show it in a different way. We have two cats currently. One is mental and the other is a runt. The cat that is mental is a boy, and he only purred for about 1 year, then didn't. He shows his love by rubbing on us, and cuddling us. So really, it may purr a little later in life, but it is happy now, and if it stay's that way, chances are, that it will purr. No, cats can't "not purr".

As they get older, may happen. Some cats have such a soft purr you can hardly hear it. Depends on the breed. One thing to keep in mind, purring is not necessarily a sign of contentment. Cats also purr when they are in pain.

give him some time. I had a cat like that too that turned out to be a purr monster. I don't think there is any genetic thing out there that would make a kitty not purr. I'm sure he will....

Some cats just don't purr, and some don't realize they can until they're grown up. I wouldn't worry about it.
