Lots of kids are able to do this at so young an age. Now, having said that, keep on with her. Teach her and keep her stimulated, because she very well could be gifted. But whether she is or she isn't, you are doing something right! Good job, mom!

maybe yes and maybe no... There are a lot other signs you should look for. My son happens to a be gifted child and he did alphabet and numbers and letter sound well before he tured 2 ,started reading signs and words and did simple math when he was 2. and at 3 yr he was reading 2nd grade level . However, he is what they called exceptionally gifted. There are basically 4 level of giftneness. moderate, highly, exceptional and profound.
Check the milestone for the gifted here

Remeber, there is not a lot support from public school when it comes to gifted child. You have a lot responsibility. Not to push , giving enough challenge and make sure they are not bored in school.
Babycenter has a good gifted children board if you need to ask specific question.

Personally, I'd wait a while until thinking about that label. I mean, being gifted might be true or might not be. For example, some parents of (I know it's a different age group, but) first graders or kindergarteners tell their kids' teachers about how gifted their children are because they can spell a bunch of different words. Still, a machine can do that. Just don't think about it, but watch your kids. Plus, the "gifted" status usually doesn't matter very much for several years. If you want to check anything, try an IQ test. A professional one will be accurate, but those are expensive. Still, it would be worth it, as they actually determine a real IQ, whereas an internet one just determines their knowledge of things.

My son could do that at that age as well. Everyone has always made comments about him. He talked in sentences early and a lot of different things. He could read in kindergarten (really good too). My point is to me he is gifted although I don't think it is really technically gifted. Who cares anyway. Now our daughter is 3.5 and doesn't do everything at this age he was doing by now but she too is GIFTED to us.
I know my answer seems corny but more simply probably not, when my son went even to first grade I was waiting to see if the teacher wanted to bump him up a grade but she never said anything. She is a very good teacher too, she won teacher of the year. He is now going into second grade and I like him being in his own age group anyway.
Now I am really done since that part wasn't so simple either.
Hopefully, what you have to look forward to is good grades in school from her.

I don't know if she is gifted, but it sounds like she has a good mom who loves to spend time and work with her. Just keep working with her on shapes and colors and things like that. When my son was two he knew over 20 books by heart and people thought he could read. And I'm talking big books like the cat in the hat. I have continued to work with him and his brother who is 2 years younger and now I home school them both. You should consider this because you can work with her at her pace and if she is gifted you can skip grades if need be. But that is still pretty far in the future.

I have a daughter who just turned 2 that does the same thing. Her vocabulary was well over 200 when she hit 18 months and memorizes every single book we read to her. The other mothers in my playgroup comment on it, but it stands out more than other developmental skills. She may better in this area or just have a really developed memory, but I notice skills in the other children she hasn't mastered like jumping or fine motor skills (eating with silverware and drawing more than scribbling). Children work on different skills at different rates and by the time they hit kindergarten you probably won't be able to pick out the early talker or early walker. Just enjoy her now and marvel in what she is capable of and work with those skills she may not have mastered. She will most likely be ahead of the group, but not necessarily because she learned early, but because you took the time to read to her and spend time with her!!

I like the Notes from the Underbelly episode where the parents were so proud the baby could trace the path of the raisen with its head (3 days before he was spose to in the "book") and the parents assumed he was gifted. Its so true.

She's advanced, like my 2 year old. He can recognize all the letters of the alphabet, and knows #s up to 20.
Isn't amazing to watch them learn something?

Children at this age are like sponges and will soak up what you teach them. The fact is that most 2 year olds are capable of knowing all of this, but no one bothers to teach them. I'm sure your little one is just an average 2 year old, and it's great that you have taken the time to teach her these things.
