Before the coming of Islam it (tolerance) had never been preached as an essential part of religion...

Islam 1100 years ago was much more tolerant than its contemporary West,but not as tolerant religiously as the Far East. Muslims tolerated "People of the Book" as long as they "submitted to the yoke of Islam" and showed no real tolerance to Non Abrahamic/Monotheistic faiths and peoples.
Muslim majority nations today are among the least tolerant and most unwelcoming places on earth,sorry to say. I think moderate Muslims have to go as missionaries to convert Muslim peoples and cultures to humane and tolerant behavior.

I wonder how many other people know who he is/was?
There are a few other things I wonder, too...
For instance, was Marmaduke a Muslim?
If he is, then this speech is not going to fly as proof of tolerance in Islam.

The Islamic Q’uran is NON-Contextual and relies on the Bukhari and Tabari to paint its backdrops. (Top 3 most ‘holy’ Islamic books). Muslims who do not become terrorists are those who have cooked up contextual excuses for the non-contextual qur'an for themselves. These muslims have to continually hide behind a veil of pretense and deliberate ignorance to remain as ‘moderates’. I call them strictly as non-practising muslims.

Terrorists are those who are able to follow the Qur'an, clearly and directly and without shame or excuse for their endeavor.

Terrorist teachings are prevalent throughout the qur’an.

Qur’an 5:51 “Believers, take not Jews and Christians for your friends.”
Bukhari [4:52:177]: Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him!"

Bukhari, V1B4N234: "A group of people from the Oreyneh and Oqayelh tribes came to the prophet to embrace Islam, the prophet advised them to drink the urine of the camels. Later on when they killed the prophet's shepherd, the prophet seized them, gouged out their eyes, cut their hands and legs, and left them thirsty in the desert to die."

When a Muslim declares that Islam is a religion of peace, he/she is either ignorant of the Koran (Qur'an), or is deceitfully thinking of this "peace", as it extends only to those within the Muslim Community. The deceit is that they will not tell you exactly what they mean. According to the Qur'an: "Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah. Those who follow him are merciful to one another, but ruthless to unbelievers" Sura 48:29. "Kill the Mushrikun (unbelievers) wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush..." Sura 9:5. Also see Sura 9:29
