I heard that a friend is dead through the rumor mill yesterday.
Would the coroners office of medical examiner's office be able to provide me with this information. The person has no family locally and I don't know how to reach them. It would have happened over the weekend. There will probably be no obit in the paper since he was here alone and it is too soon for the death certificate.I really need to find out if it is true.

Unless the victim died in a hospital (basically what is called a witnessed death) and is claimed by family the county corner/medical examiner takes the case. If it was a violent death the ME definitely gets the case. The intake information is available, in fact an ME investigator would be glad to tell you if they have him and get any information they can from you about the victim.
Nope dead people are not covered by privacy laws. The ME can release anything they want. Often they release information on investigations the police would rather not be made public yet.

File a report in the Police Headquarters regarding the alleged death of your friend so that they could investigate in the locality where he was last sighted.

Try calling the sheriff's Dept or pokice Dept there and asking if a person by that name died, or who you could ask. Be sure to explain you are a concerned friend.
Or call the local paper and ask for the writer of the obituary page and ask if there were any deaths that did not make the paper over the weekend and give your friends age, sex and anything else you know that might help or if he knows who to ask

The coroner and M.E would know, but might not be able to release the information to you.
It would be best to go in to your local police station and explain the situation to them. They may be able to find out for you.
