Im on prozac too, and its the first thing that they put me on. When I was talking to my doctor about it he explained to me that out of all the anti-depressant out there, prozac is the least likey to cause suicidal behavior. (before it actually starts to work smoothly, there is a risk of suicidal thoughts) he made that very very clear to me. It also has some of the highest feedback of all medications too, and it takes little adjusting with the doses long term while with mild antidepressant it might require moving up to to stronger ones which could cause some bad symptoms. My doctor honestly lectured me for like and hour, and I checked all over the internet so thats how I know! I hope this helps answer your question, take care! :)

Prozac is one of several 'front line' medications for people with depression and anxiety. It's been around a fair while and has a good safety record, and more is known about the long term effects of taking it than other, newer medications.

In addition, Prozac is one of the easiest anti depressants to discontinue; it has a long half-life and so stays in the system far longer than any of the others. This makes it a good first choice for people with depression.

Here in the UK, the first drug usually offered right now seems to be Citalopram(Celexa).

Prozac was introduced in 1986 and has been proven to be a very effective medication for those suffering from depression, panic disorder, bulimia nervosa and obsessive compulsive disorder. The response to any antidepressant medication is not about milder or stronger. Its about how receptive the individual is the the medication and everyone is different

This is a great question, and I too have been searching for the answer to this question. I am 17, almost 18. I was put on 40 mgs of prozac when I was 14. I don't understand why they would put such a strong medication on young teens. I would suppose they do it because this medication is a somewhat expensive medication and they are getting kick backs from insurance companies. But, thats my guess.

Prozac tends to be the most frequently used antidepressant. Your categorization as milder anti-depressant is false. It is a dosage of the med that determines how strong it is.

because prozac is a pretty mild medication itself and has also been effective in treating a large number of people
