I'm new to looking at hybrid cars and am not sure what I should be looking for. Any suggestions?

You can start by going to http://www.hybridcars.com
This site will give you all the info you want about Hybrids in general.

MY PICK:

Ford Escape Hybrid. It's the 'greenest' SUV

It also has a large federal tax incentive available & it has actually gone DOWN in price each year of its production ('05-'06-'07-'08)
Here's a price comparison for you.
http://www.fordvehicles.com/suvs/escape/...
(note; the '08 Hybrid Escape qualifies for a federal tax incentive of $3000 , which has NOT been applied to the prices shown in this example)

I've driven one extensively & it is really FUN to drive.

In my experience, I DOUBLED my MPG (hybrid vs non-hybrid V6 Escape, both 4X4 ) & I drive like a complete idiot!

Also New York City taxi drivers have put HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of miles on theirs (withno problems, btw) & if they can survive that kind of abuse ( LOL ) I think they can handle anything.

Get a 2008 Ford Escape! It has the best gas mileage (31 freeway, 36 city) than any other hybrid SUV in the world. It also has offroad capabilites, a nice looking and comfortable interior, a rugged looking exterior, great quality and reliability, and has been the best selling small SUV in America since 2001. Ford has really put in a lot of effort in the Escape and their Fusion sedan. You should at least look at this SUV when you are thinking of buying.

The only thing that I want to add to all the prior suggestions is... Do you do most of your driving in the city?
If most of your driving is commuting ant 45 mph and above, then you are wasting money by trying to switch to a hybrid.
The Saturn Vue green-line is the cheapest hybrid SUV, and the Ford Escape is next up... but it offers better milage.... but this would be offset by the higher price initially.
I hope this helps...
I wouldn't really recommend the Toyota Highlander Hybrid or the Lexus, they are performance SUV's that don't get great gas milage.

I am the Internet manager at a dealership. Every customer I speak to is amazed at the amount of information available on the internet. I would definatly start here. One of my customers told me about a website (fightingchance.com) where for $30 you can get the true price the dealer pays for the vehicle and all options. I would definatly recommend sending inquiries to at least 3 dealerships for each brand so thatthey can compete for your business. As for the tax credit, I think Toyota and Lexus owners are only getting about a 1/4 of the credit. I believe Escape owners are the only one getting the full credit. You can check out car and driver, edmunds, and other auto rating websites to see which ones are the best bang for the buck. Hope this helps, Good Luck!
